Holley Carb Gurus - Stripped Threads??
After changing the power valve and jets in my Holley 750 DP I was reinstalling the fuel bowl in the front and as I was tightening the 4 bolts that hold the fuel bowl to the carb the top left bolt (Pass. Side) would not tighten.
I do not put much torque on these bolts, I just snug them but that one bolt would not hold any torque at all. It just turns with no resistance so I am thinking that the threads in the carb body are stripped. The carb does not leak now but I am wondering if the next time I have the bowl off if a leak will occur. What are my options carb gurus?? |
Holley has a heli-coil repair for the bowl screws.

Thanks for the info!! A $90 fix kit is better than $$$$$ for a new carb body!!
|
Those blasted bolts sure do strip easy, when there 'time' is up, it don't take nothing to strip 'em.
I used the Heli Coil on some old carbs, it aint easy putting them in. I got it, but man it was a hassle. Eventually I threw the darn carbs away (twins) and bought two brand new ones. :D |
It's a 12-24 Thread. Doesn't cost $90.00 to repair. Take it to an Engine shop. 10 Minute job including cigarette break.!!!!

What Rich said. NINETY FRIGGIN" DOLLARS?That's just Holley trying recover part of their lost market.Screw 'em.Pun intended. |
Actually, I 'studded' mine! Took awhile to find a place where I could buy the heli's, drove down there, got all the installation tools required as well. Got some 'all thread', stainless steel, pulled up a chair and stuggled to get them dam helis in there straight. 10 minutes my a$$, and a WHOLE pack of cigarettes. Put nuts on the end of the 'studs', of course that leaked. Figured out how to make a gasket for the studs (did I mention 10 minutes my a$$?)... Finally got the suckers back together and NEVER could get them to run right (power valves, jet changes, you name it). It was shortly after than I threw in the towel and bought some new ones.

When you said you "studded it"; sounded like a polite way of saying you **cked it up!
Ernie: You can't repair those Holleys out on a BarBque table with a hand drill squint'n with one eye shut, you gotta put it in a mill or drill press, and quit tryin' to reinvent the wheel? YOU'RE the guy that charges $90.00 for a $20.00 repair. Why try to make a speedy jet change available, especially in Hawaii. Yea...shoulda took 10 minutes. Just kidd'n........your description of the repair was a little over the top. |
Over the top, but fairly accurate! Both YOUR description and mine. One should not take a 'simple' repair for granted.
But seriously, sometimes with a carb you really do need to consider replacing it. Bodies and parts warp or whatever and they can be hell to dial in as a result. |
Terry. One of my carb bolts stripped on my 850 Holley some time ago. I bought the helicoil kit ($75) and did all 8 bolts at the same time. My only caution is that the walls can be very thin between the newly drilled and tapped bolt hole(s) and the side of the carb body. While tapping one of my bolt holes, a very slight weeping gas leak was discovered in a thin area after buttoning everything up and turning on the fuel pump. Had to carefully use a little JB Weld to seal it. No leaks again and the repair was practically invisible.

I had the same problem. Took the carb apart, rethreaded it, reassembled it and it leaked like a mother. Took it to pieces again, reassembled...did it twice more and then...TOOK IT OFF, HELD IT BY THE FUEL INTAKE LINE AND SWUNG IT AS HARD AS I COULD AGAINST A CONCRETE WALL...:)...THEN I WENT AND BOUGHT A BRAND NEW DEMON, INSTALLED THAT AND FUNNILY ENOUGH, THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY...COMPLETELY!

Well Rick had an interesing suggestion you didn't try GlynMeek, "Lag Bolts", extra grip, never strip those suckers.
