CSX4000 body on an original style chassis-HELP
Dubbed "The Big Problem" in my gallery. This is the main hurdle I must jump to finish the car. The body (CSX4000) as seen in the link below won't fit down on the chassis (Hi-Tech, original style).
The "Big Problem" - Club Cobra Photo Gallery What should I do? Cut the tubes? I have relieved the fiberglass a little bit, but don't want to do much more because it will not look good. |
PM sent.

The Glass Shelby chassis is quite a bit different in that area than an original style chassis. The support tube at that point on a 4000 swings back behind the wheel arch area and follows the body back to the birdcage near the roll bar.
You would need to cut that tube out just above the door latch and fabricate a new one to support the body but out of the way of the wheel arch. If you can get a picture of a fiberglass Shelby chassis, you could immediately see how that area is different. |
How many times are you going to ask this John?

Sal,
Bill said it, "Until he gets the right answer." Three Peaks came through with it. Now I need to do it. John :) |

Bill,
This looks to be my best option from three peaks: "You would need to cut that tube out just above the door latch and fabricate a new one to support the body but out of the way of the wheel arch. If you can get a picture of a fiberglass Shelby chassis, you could immediately see how that area is different." I spoke with surfer44 today, who had a similar car (CSX body on Hi-Tech chassis) years ago. He got the car from a company who manufacturers CSX4000 parts in West Covina, CA. He could not remember their name. My plan is to cut the tubes on the rear cowl hoop. Once the body is down, I will somehow get the tubes in position and tack weld them in place. Problem: If I get the tubes in place with the body on, the body might not want to come off. If this is the case...I should weld the tubes in place after the BB frame mounts have been installed and the mods to the transmission cross member have been made to accommodate the Tremec. Once all the mods are done, stick the body on and hope it never needs to come off again. |

With the curve under on the sides of the 4000 body I'm finding it has to come way apart to get over the cowl hoop. It also doesn't want to go over the frame extensions. I had to start taking pieces off the frame to get the body to fit over. I'm thinking instead of getting away from the original style birdcage I might glass a couple of tubes to the inside of the body below the doors and use these to pin and realign the body like the ally cars. That way I think I can put the back section on from the back and the front on from the front. It's a tough decision to make as to when to permanently attach the body to the frame. Check some good pics of the 4000 frame here csx4269 071.jpg

mickmate,
Thanks for pic link. Know of anymore CSX4000 chassis pics? |
I have a piece of wood bracing the top of the cockpit on my body. You can't lift the rear and shorten that opening enough to get it over that door tube huh?

Did you go here? CSX4221 Chassis
