refilling differentials and transmissions...pumps?
Does anyone know of a pump suitable for getting fluid into differentials and transmissions?
The fill hole on a Jaguar/Dana differential is pretty hard to get to. The trans is easier to get to, but hard to get the bottle up to run into the fill hole. Last time I used a long plastic tube and held the oil bottle in the fender well. Of course, the hose fell out of the diff, then the hose fell off the nipple of the gear oil bottle...total mess. Am considering trying to use an old Holley electric fuel pump that leaks gasoline, but that shouldn't be an issue with gear oil. Was wondering if something like that Holley blue could move 90 weight or 75/140 gear lube? Short of going to a shop, how do you refill diffs and trans? thanks, Pete |
napa or oreillys usually have gear oil pump/suction tool that looks kinda like a grease gun.

Valvoline and many other gear oils come in a dispenser with a pump. Napa has separate pump that will screw onto the common bottle sizes.

Marine Supplies have pumps
Most marine supply houses have hand pumps that screw into plastic oil bottles. They also come with a length of plastic hose with a metal screw fitting at the other end. These are designed to pump oil into outboard drive units. Simply cut the plastic hose at the metal fitting and use it to fill diffs and transmissions easily.

Amsoil sells a hand pump for this specific type application! I have one and used it today for my tranny oil, and last year for my rear end oil on my Vett! I think it was about $20 or so. I will see if I can find it on their website! Go to the Amsoil.com website then click on Online store. In the search window at the right, put in "Hand pump" You will find it about 6 items down!! It's only $11 & change!! Works great. Just use a small hose clamp to hold the rubber hose on the pump snout, or oil will squeeze past a little and drip!! Good Luck!

Take a regular oil can with a trigger pump handle and cut the tip off the flexible hose. Fill it with gear oil and pump away.

For the thinner oils,ie;atf,I use a garden sprayer with the nozzle cut off,clean and neat!
I never tried it with anything thicker,may be veerry sllooww! |

Volume out of a squirt-oiler is pretty small...the Hudson sprayer type garden pump, especially a small one no more than a quart or two, may have some possibilities. Something that can store the fluid you don't use till the next fluid change. Also cheap enough to have several, on for 90W for the Jaguar diff in the Cobra and one for synthetic 75/140 synthetic for my Jeep Grand Cherokee that seems to demand endless fluid changes. PITHA. Now...MIRACLE GROW...great stuff...used it on the crankshaft...now I have a 347" stoker. Really don't want an FE in the FIA car, but...could any of the "alchemists" out there that can suggest something to spray on the cast iron block that transmutes it to ALUMINUM? (Gold would be OK to). This type of pump is readily available at most quality auto parts stores such as NAPA. They work pretty well in a confined area, and if necessary can be tossed when done. |

The one I got had a hose that attached to the bottom of the pump (inside the bottle of oil) that could be cut off to allow for different depth bottles instead of lengths of plastic tube as in the photo. Just be sure the pump screws onto the bottle or it could get a litttle messy?? BUT they work pretty well.
