have to wire this solenoid but.....
does it matter which lug is used for battery or starter? have the two lugs and a starter terminal, no ignition terminal.
also... the starter cable coming from the solenoid can go to the solenoid terminal on the starter that has the cable disappearing into the starter, thereby bypassing the solenoid on the starter, correct? just don't want to get into a backwards wormhole phenomenon and miss something. |
On the first question, it doesn't matter which side of the firewall solenoid the cables are on, but I like the battery cable on the fender side for ease of hooking up a battery charger or jumping the battery, since my battery is buried under the fender on the right side.
On the second question, if you wire the starter cable to the bottom lug of the starter-mounted solenoid and bypass that solenoid, the starter will run but will not engage. When the solenoid energizes it does two things: it flings the starter gear out of the housing so it engages the flywheel, and it makes contact between the starter cable and the starter motor. I wired the cable to the top lug, and had the solenoid trigger wire to the same terminal, so when the cable got voltage (from the firewall-mounted solenoid), the starter solenoid was energized, thereby engaging the bendix and the flywheel and completing the connection to the starter motor. |
aaaahhh, i knew it. an upside down catastrophe waiting to happen. so i drop a cable from the solenoid to the outside lug on the starter solenoid and a hot wire off this to the small terminal so when powered the juice is there along with the solenoid being energized.

What style starter are you using? I assume it's a modern high-torque style starter. The way you are planning to wire it may allow the starter pinion gear to stay engaged for a second or maybe forever when power is removed.
Wiring it this way may allow the drive to stay engaged: battery to "A" terminal on Ford solenoid, "B" terminal connected to the starter mounted solenoid power lug, jumper to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid. Wiring it this way will not allow starter drive to stay engaged: battery to "A" terminal on the Ford solenoid, "A" terminal to the power lug on the starter mounted solenoid, "B" terminal on the Ford solenoid to the "S" terminal on the starter mounted solenoid. Why use a slave solenoid if the ford starter has its own throw-in solenoid. I have asked this question in the past, and never gotten an answer. How many amps does your starter pull to roll the engine?

alright then, lets say i come off "B" with hot cable to "BATT" and jumper from "BATT" to "S", would this accomplish same thing? i can do either.
maurice, the starter solenoid is in a very tight spot and i have a pretty good stack of wires to b+ right now, and i can put a solenoid in a very accesible spot away from heat. i don't know how many amps a starter pulls. |
If you have a PGMR starter, commonly called a "mini starter" wire it per the enclosed diagram. This is from the PGMR starter install instructions. There is another way to make it work, but the alternate method may lead to starter run on.

alright, so i come off the battery lug to the starter solenoid as per regular hookup, then off the opposing battery lug to the starter solenoid trigger stud with 12 ga. wire. then the independent solenoid trigger is used for the start switch. think i'll go with this.....for now. freakin wiring!

Get rid of the Ford solenoid if your not running a Ford starter. Serves no purpose with a GM / Chrysler style starter.
Put a "use genuine GM parts" sticker over the holes in the fender.%/ |
The diagram from PGMR posted by J Persons essentially uses the firewall solenoid to energize the starter solenoid. Why not just run direct from the battery to the starter and from the ignition switch to the solenoid trigger terminal, eliminating the firewall solenoid and cleaning up the wiring?
If you want to use the firewall solenoid, it would be more conventional run the B+ cable to the firewall solenoid, big cable to the starter solenoid, and a short jumper on the starter solenoid. Wired that way, the ignition switch energizes the firewall solenoid, sending B+ to the starter. That energizes the starter solenoid, which completes the circuit to the motor at the same time the starter gear engages the flywheel. Don't see any downside to it. Just my nickel's worth... |
