Steering wheel location

Hi folks,
I'm at that stage that I need to layout my instruments. I noticed my steering wheel has been placed a little to far over to the left (not a Brit car for you folks over the pond). Is there a standard rule of thumb of how far does the steering wheel need to be from the door?

At the moment, I think it's a little tight, some where around 3" between the wheel and door.....that's just barely the average hand to grip the wheel on the left.
Do share your views.

Mine is exactly 4" from the door to the wheel

Roscoe,
Now that sounds more like it.

I take it that they could never be in synch with the center of the drivers seat?
