AN sizing
Hi all,
Just looking at the catologue for AN fittings. Does anyone have a size chart for AN. What is 10 AN or 12 AN in imperial sizing..:confused: AN is Army/Navy but I can work out if AN 12 is 1/2" etc. Any list or link to a site would be good. I have checked Russell and Earl to no avail - if I'm looking in the right place..:confused: |

The Aeroquip site has lots of good info. On this chart they show OD and ID sizes of the various hose sizes.

Dividing the AN number by 16 only gives you a rough idea of the actual inner diameter size. An AN-12 hose is not EXACTLY 3/4" in diameter so don't try to push an AN-12 hose onto a 3/4" hose fitting. That's why you can also find actual 3/4" braided steel hose for heater use, etc. The two hoses are not interchangeable. Conversely, don't try to use 3/4" braided hose with an AN-12 fitting. As already posted, the AeroQuip site has a handy sizing guide to help you.

AN is for tubing and fittings with 16 = 1". pipe is measured by the inside diameter opening and tubing is the outside diameter of the tube itself.#3 = 3/16" , #4 = 1/4",#5= 5/16", #6=3/8", #8=1/2" #10=5/8", #12= 3/4",#14=7/8", and #16=1", and so on.

I have a chart on page 141 in my book, "Racing Engine Builder's Handbook". If you don't have a copy of this great book :LOL: following are some specifics. As was said, the dash number is pipe size in 1/16". ID for -10 and -12 AN hose is 9/16" and 11/16", respectively. I think Carroll Smith covered this subject in depth in his book on Racing Hardware.
