1/2 impact wrench Torque Recommendation

Hi,
I'm new to air tools. I have a 1/2 impact wrench with 300 pounds of torque--max. I am thinking I need another one with a higher rating for those tough lug nuts for example.

Any torque recommendations 500??? more???

Thanks

The majority of lug nuts should never exceed 100 ft lbs. (at least on aluminum rims like on a Corvette). I think on my C5 the specs are 85 or 95.

300 ft lbs is a tremendous amount of torque usually reserved for axle nuts, etc.

Let me clarify. I am talking more about the torque needed to remove stubborn bolts/lug nuts, rusty bolts, etc. I am aware that I will probably never need that much torque to tighten bolts as you mentioned.

I got on of those 1000 ft/lb composite guns from Matco. It is BY FAR the strongest 1/2 inch drive gun in the dealership.

WOW Matco It must have cost a 1,000 bucks too!

Sorry, I don't use an impact wrench on anything.

If I take a vehicle in to have work done, I will tip them $20.00 or so not to use one.

Having worked for the Tool division of Ingersoll-Rand in the past, I could be biased, but the new 2135TiMax is an awesome tool.

I can probably get them for a very good price as well, maybe a little over $200. Shop around, they are all over the internet. I also have a 231 which is a very good tool for the money, probably around $100.

Not quite. It was around $260. Although it is red & says Matco on it, I would say that it is produced by Ingersol Rand.

Ingersal-Rand 244, if this won't knock it loose you need to be using a 3/4 drive gun. The composite guns are great if you like numb hands. (don't weigh enough)

1/2 drive has it's limits, but the 244 has yet to fail me.

Yes, get a 500# 1/2" inpact, you'll use it a lot. A 300# is considered pretty weak. Just because it's 500#'s, doesn't mean you should crank down your lug nuts to 500#'s, you should use a torque wrench to torque them down to 100#'s. But when removing them, it will take a whole lot more than 100#'s.

I've got a IR 2131. Alway's been happy with it.
They have since replaced it with the 2135TiMax
