How do I measure the "Carrier Bearing" for the installation kit??
I am not sure what I am supposed to measure to get the carrier bearing diameter for the 28 spline rearend. Do I measure the outside diameter of the race, or am I measuring the OD of the bearing itself? Once I know what my carrier bearing diameter is, I can get the parts on the way and start driving this beast.. I am going after the summit installation kit

Carrier Bearing /////////////// I am not sure how to tell which carrier bearing I have to get the complete install kit to do the full job..? If you have a better kit or know how to measure that distance, I am all ears.. One of these days I hope I can at least answer one question someone may have in these forums, that will help me sleep at night after all the help I have recieved for this site. I am deeply indebted to you fellas. |
OD of the Side Bearing, or ID of the Side Bearing bore in the case. There are also numbers on the Bearing cone and race if you cannot measure the dimension. All the bearings can be had locally.

As Rick said, measure the outside diameter of the carrier side bearing's outer race. In addition, there should be some part numbers on the old bearings. Those numbers can be crossed over to a replacement set/kit also. With the 28 spline 9" you're probably running the small OD bearings anyway. Don't forget to check if you have a crush sleeve or solid spacer. The install kits all come with the crush sleeve. If you have a solid spacer now you can reutilise it with the new setup. You might want to buy a solid spacer shim pack though as different shims may be required when resetting the pinion preload.
You'll be measuring the OD of the upper/lower lefthand picture. http://image.off-roadweb.com/f/12173...er_bearing.jpg |
