Add this to you annual checklist...

When checking/tightening all of your nuts and bolts during periodic maintenance, be sure to check the bolts on the starter. If the top bolt starts to loosen, it will torque when the starter is engaged. The starter teeth will then be out of alignment with the flywheel, and will shear off. The next time you go to start it, it wont engage as there are no teeth left on the starter gear. Ask me how I know...

Great point-sorry you found out hard way.
Reassemble with red Loctite or drill bolts and safety wire (which is a PIA) but you'll never worry about it again.

It could have been worse. It made some noise on start up, so I figured I would check it out when I got home. I was on my way to PA for the Cobra show, and stopped to pick up something to eat about 4 miles from the house. When I got back in = no go. If I didn't stop for food, I would have been in PA when it crapped out.

Its all back together now with a new starter with no permanent damage. I thought about the red loc-tite also, good point.

I like to use studs anchord with red Locktite and mechanical locknuts such as Jet Nuts.
