I agree the mounts on your friends car may be different from others.....he either must not have original SPF sidepipes and/or sidepipe mounts. I remember seeing that bracket on a sidepipe website, but I can't remember where. I know for a fact it is not an original SPF mounting bracket. These are what SPF supplies. The first picture is from the Superformance Mark III Installation Manual. In Patricks picture above, the bracket attached to the muffler is designed very similar to what I observed on a CSX3XXX car a few years ago. It has a lot of surface area attached to the muffler casing in vertical shear and with the 90 degree fold in the metal provides lateral stability also. However in lieu of the large rubber "Strap" on the ERA cars, the CSX had 2 "hangers" spaced about 3/4" apart, made of similar gauge sheet metal (like the bracket) welded from above. The blade on the muffler bracket had a hole about 5/8" and is sandwiched with one of the round 2 piece grommets I mentioned earlier, then the blade (with grommet) slides between the two hangers and a 5/16" bolt goes through all 3 pieces, providing a very stout design. The rubber grommet helps dampen the sound harmonics from the chassis.

I made these mounts from billet.

Here is pic of sidepipe bracket used on my West Coast. Its a Walker Part number but I dont know where to find it. Two 5/16 bolts mount it into the chassis rail's steel nut-serts. Rectangular piece of dense rubber is molded with a slot to accept the steel tab off of the pipe. This pic is a top view.

As promised, here are the SPF mounts:

Works very well. You just have to make sure that the stems are welded on straight so that you don't have any load/shear on them when they are bolted on. You will also notice that I braced the factory stem with more material, as they are prone to cracking. -Dean |
Contemporary used sway bar links from of all things a '57 Chevy. It's real simple, it's cheap, and it works well. Moog part number K6217.:)

Yes, that is the picture of the frame mount. The problem with the tang that mounts to the pipe is the weld has broken on some. The picture that Kevin is showing is the mount that I use. It is made out of stainless and uses a taping plate for a better foot print to weld on the muffler body. When mounted to the car it attaches to the Superformance frame detail. We have found it to be strong enought for an average person to stand on. Your mount to the muffler body is a good reinforcement to the supplied standard mount.
