351W intake gasket recomendations??
I have a 351W with Victor Jr. heads and intake manifold. The engine was rebuilt last year and I'm noticing a puddle of oil on the back of the block every time a take the car out for a short drive.
The engine builder used the cork seal for the back of the intake manifold and it hasn't moved but it is clearly leaking. I'm looking for recommendations for: 1. What brand intake gaskets to use (part number if possible)? 2. Should I use cork or a bead of silicone? I appreciate any suggestions you have. I can't stand oil leaks. Dan |

Send Steve (Panavia) a PM or email. The Fel-Pro gasket on my engine failed and the Mustang Ranch replaced it with an Edelbrock gasket. |

I had Felpro gaskets fail at the intake runners on cylinders 2 and 3 on my 351w. After confirming the manifold was not warped, I changed out the gaskets with Cometic and used a high temp sealent on both sides from Toyota (part # 00295-00103). Cross torque the bolts on installation (24 lbs.), run the engine, let it cool over night and retorque. No problems since. I now check the torque on the intake bolts every couple of months. anicholas KMP 517 |

I've been using Felpro gaskets for 40 years and have never had a failure but I don't remember ever seeing any black intake gaskets. They were always blue. I never use the end gaskets on intakes. Clean everything with acetone and use a bead of silicone.

OK, so a few years ago we had issues with the Fel-pro black gaskets failing in the face of modern gasoline and coolant. We then very shortly went to the Edelbrock 7xxx series of gaskets and haven't looked back. (depending on setup) -- For front and rear seals we use a healthy bead of "Right-Stuff" which is an air-propellant silicone. We also will do a small bead around the water jackets, and leave the intakes dry. The most important things here are cleanliness and dry surfaces ; cleaned with brake-kleen, or isoprophyl alcohol before you start, free of all oil gasket materiel / and after you put it together torque the intake down 19lbs max for AL intake , 24 Lbs Iron intake. KEY: Let the whole thing dry overnight 12 hours+ , prior to coolant and any firing up. Hope this helps.!!!! |

Clean everything (twice), I smear a little blue RVT or Right Stuff around the water jackets on each end of the cylinder head and put the gasket on the head and let it "set", does 2 things, seals it up and holds the gasket in the proper place when installing the intake. Put a generous bead of Right Stuff or RVT on the block ends, NEVER EVER USE THE CORK END GASKETS. Let that sit for a few minutes till tacky then carefully install the intake and tighten the bolts down in 3 or 4 steps in the proper sequence...... So far, no problems!!!!!!!!!!! David |
