Alternator Bracket-High/Low?
There seems to be two ways to install an alternator on a 302. Either slung down low or sitting high. Both ways pivot off the head. I'm going for a very stock look, but can't seem to find a low slung set-up.
I tried flipping the adjusting bracket on a stock steel unit and anchoring it off the lower part of the water pump housing, but no good. What are my options? Thanks in advance, Doug in Louisiana |
The low mount was stock in the early Mustangs. For the chepest set up, cruise the bone yards. For new parts, check out e-bay or any of the Mustang parts catalogs. If you want something with pizazz, check out March or Forte's.

Doug, I intended to go low with mine on a 351w. I toiled over it. Puchsed the March set. Turned out that the frame on my unique interfeered with the set up. I was able to do some simple mods and mount it topside. Now that the car is finished I like it where its at. Good luck

I did it the same way on my Unique. I bought low-mount March brackets and couldn't make them work, so I went with the high-mount. I have solid lifters with high valve covers and use T-bolts to keep the valve covers down so my alt. has a very tight adjustment range. I went through 2-3 adjustment rods and and belts but I finally got it right and it only cost me about $500!!

There is enough reproduction early mustang hardware kits, (289-351W) and original stuff that you can come up with a good durable setup and save the billet aluminum money for gasoline and cheeseburgers.

I have, as does Roush, a bracket to mount a one wire alternator low on the passenger side.
It moves the Alternator in and down to better clear. |
I also have issues with mounting

Hey Guys, I found the same issues when trying to mount my alternator down low on the passenger side, the frame interferes. I mocked it up to sit in front of the valve cover on the drivers side.
Can you guys think of any issues with mounting it here as shown? |
Mine is mounted on the drivers side up high off of the head. I had to make a bracket but it works just fine.

Initially, I purchased a March set up for low mounting and it interfered with my chassis. I had to send it back and get the upper mount, which worked great.
|
I mounted mine high and on the passenger side.

I went with the custom bracket, but it looked to high so I flipped it over to the other side. I think I've installed it upside down because I had to make a bracket to connect the alternator bolt to the head. You can sort of see what I mean in the pics.
