Looking to add some performance to a 306
I use to own a couple 5.0 Mustangs but it's been a long time and I am not sure if things have changed. Here are specs on the motor:
306 EFI 5.0 GT upper and lower intake E7 heads with Street port and Polish 19# injectors 10:1 compression CompCam XE266HR-12 I was going to start basic and within the next year add a supercharger. I was going to start with a Trickflow upper and lower manifold but I am not sure where I should go after that. Throttle body? What are a list of performance parts i can add to work my way up to a supercharger or what would you suggest? |
Are you going to make all the changes on the motor at the same time?
Heads, cam, supercharger, etc. ??? Save your money and do everything at one time. You will need a chip and dyno time to get everything correct. Why do it twice? How much horsepower do you want? High rpm motor or low end torque for the street? High horsepower race motor don't drive well on the street. With a supercharger you will need low compression. 10.2 is to high. A cam for a supercharged motor will be different than a non-charged motor. I would think??? I think a good street Cobra needs 400 to 500 rear wheel horsepower. That would be about 500 to 600 flywheel. Take your time and do your research before you start buying parts. Dwight stroke it to 347 and forget the charger |
1st - never owned nor built a blown engine. Read a fair amount on the subject.
You can get away with the 10:1 compression, if you have a good after cooler. If the air temp going into the intake stays down you can ovoid detonation, however you may have to run richer fuel ratio than ideal to help keep detonation under control. The higher the boost pressure, the more you will have to fight to keep detonation under control. If your engine is 300 hp, 5 psi should get you to 400 hp and 10 psi to 500 hp, roughly. Your going to put about $4K into a centrifugal blower and air to air after cooler. If I was going that route and 400 hp or so was enough, I wouldn't spend any other money on the intake, heads or cam. To feed that much power, your injectors are not big enough and your mass flow sensor isn't either. Fuel lines may not be big enough. Fuel pump may not pump enough. The ECU will have to be totally re-tuned. Do you have an EEC4 or EEC5? You will likely need an expert tuner for such a set up. Your bottom end may hold up to 400 hp pretty good, but likely will not stand up to 500 hp. If your going to put a new rotating assembly in it, you might as well go to a 331 or 347. My gut feel is that a 331 will live longer than a 347 especially if the rpms go north of 6K. If you have to build the engine anyway, the money spent on the blower system can be put into heads, cam and induction and get you around 450 hp and still be reasonably street-able. |
Changing the heads would be the biggest jump for you right now. Even a ported E7 head probably won't flow 200 cfm. You can get an immediate 75-100 hp bump by changing to a good set of AFR heads with stud mounted roller rockers.
If you stay EFI, ditch the stock 5.0 upper/lower intakes and get a good Trick Flow intake setup, matched for the application. With those two upgrades, you'll be very surprised. Without upgrading to some good rods, I probably wouldn't take it any further than that. |

I stroked mine to 347 and added a Novi 2000.
It'd fun. |
