FMS-392 Cam
Does anyone know what cam really comes in the Ford 392 crate motor (430HP version)? I have read in many magazine articles that its a compcam XE282HR. But when I look in the Ford Racing Performance Parts Catalog is says its a Crane Cam. I called Ford Racing and they said it is a Crane Cam but could not tell me what Grind number it is. Only the specs of the cam which do not match that of the XE282HR.
XE282HR is 282/290, 232/240 and 565/574 lift Crane Cam is 232/240, 563/584 (according to Ford Tech) I am looking to install a new camshaft and can't figure out whats already in the block. Also trying to figure out if the 351 Sportsman "Roller Block" uses a standard or retrofit base circle on the cam. Thanks! |
Well the cam should have some Comp or Crane identification numbers etched in the rear cam journal. I always had heard they were Comp grinds.
As for the Sportsman roller block,if it has the raised lifter bores, and the factory spyder hold down screw bosses, you would use the standard hyd. roller base circle cams, not the retro-fit. The new 427 FRPP engine assembly, appears to be using a standard base circle version of the Comp XR294HR cam. |
It's easy enough to tell....just pop off the intake and see what lifters are used. If it's a link bar lifter, then you can use a small base circle if the lift mandates it. If it uses a spider, then you can use the standard hydraulic roller lifters. If I'm not mistaken, if it's got a 1 piece rear main seal, it should be a roller block as well.
I wouldn't worry about the grind that's in it....just choose a new one based on the engine specs and what you want to do. If you need help, just let me know...I'm a Comp Cams dealer. |
