Starter info
I'm am looking to purchase a better starter as my oem replacement has a hard time when it is hot. I have a 351w with my relay under the passenger foot box area. That would mean my starter does not have a solenoid like a chevy.
I have a couple of questions.. Would a hi torque mini starter perform the same as a hi torque starter? Should I remove the starter first to see if it is a 157 or a 164 tooth style, is there another way to figure this out? Should I stay with the ford style? Would a future oil pan change to a aviaid or similar factor in to a specific starter? Could you please give me some recommendations? Thanks Lou |

They use a Hitachi brand motor with epoxy covered armature coils. I've used the same one for over 15 years, what's to say? |
Mcleod mackes a high torque mini starter. Try Summit or Jegs.

I just saw that Snakebit, and I have a McLeod bellhousing, I will look into this.
Thanks. I was just curious about the 157 vs the 164 tooth flywheel. McLeod does not address this and they only make one for the 351w. Lou |
I just spoke to Red Roberts from McLeod. He said the 810156 is universal. It comes with a 3/8 spacer so it will work on both 157 and 164, and if you loosen the nose and rotate it about 30 degrees it will fit a 429. The solenoid can be rotated around the starter for interferences. Jumper wire included for relays on the firewall.
Sounds like a good starter. Lou |
I had hard starting trouble with my 418W 6 years ago and swapped out the stock starter for this Ford Racing starter. Works perfectly 20k miles later.
Model # M-11000-B50, Type - Ford Racing, Hi-Torque starter, 1.6 kw |
Installed on the AMX, the Ford version:
http://www.robbmcperformance.com/pro...t_starter.html For the Cobra, Summit's starter, which on the outside looks like a Tilton, but do not know who makes it. |

Go down to your local parts store and ask for a starter for a 1995 Ford Thunderbird with a 302 and a manuel transmission. This starter is the small high torque starter.....have had one on my 13 to 1 compression race motor for 5 years now, spins it over with no problems, they sell for less than 100 bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep in mind the wiring is a bit different for the HT "mini" stater vs the old type. --
http://www.fordracingparts.com/downl...0A75B50B75.pdf There are 2 vehicles I use searching for parts -- dont forget the 1995 Cobra R mustang is listed in all parts books >!! and the 1993 Mustang 5.0./ hope this helps. Steve |
Thanks guys for the info.
Steve are you saying not to use the jumper wire and to wire it the way the diagram shows. Lou |
