Seems as though the problem has worked itself out. I road tested the car to check my theory about clearing up after 3000 RPM. The car popped a few times while I headed to the expressway but definitely ran smoother than the other night. Took it up to 5500 RPM in 3rd then up to 4800 RPM in 4th before I settled into a 3500 RPM cruise. Got off the next exit and took city streets back to the house, keeping the Rs below 3000 and it ran as smooth as could be; no popping or backfires (not even when I came off the expressway with my foot off the pedal). I guess there must have been some crud that cleared itself out. Hope this cured my problem.

If it happens again, how hard would it be to switch the carbs around, even if only temporarily, to see if the problem follows the carb? I'm not all that familiar with Webers, so take it for what it's worth.......
