c40e-6015c, 4c4 above that number, it has 4c250,4c110, on the pan rails, it has a 7 with a circle around it, it has an a on the tab on the driverside of the block,it has a 5 with a box around it, cx on it also. any ideas what it is, i know what it came up as when i typed it in on the internet, but it doesnt have the big main caps?????

The block was cast, 4C4, on March 4, 1964. Without the big caps it shouldn't be a hipo. The hipo engines had partial VIN numbers stamped into the oil pan rail.

Has it been rebuilt before?

no rebuild,no turned crank, bearings had no oversize on them, i know ford did some weird stuff, there is numbers on the pan rail

According to two different publications by George Reid on Ford engines, it's a standard 1963-64 289 block.

It's a production 289 engine, non-hipo.

Didn't the HiPos also have a dab of orange paint on the crank?

and a polished area on one of the crank throws where the metal was tested:
