427W - running REALLLLY HOT on exhaust side
Checking in with anyone with a 427R windsor , - with a low serial number from the Folks in Livonia.
- I have serial number #270 -/+ (2006 ) in the shop right now, and there has got to be something goofy going on, - its exhaust temps are through the roof within minutes of startup (800F++ through the exhaust wrap) -- and it will not idle below 37 - 40 degrees of timing. We found burnt wires in the engine bay and burnt sections under hood so we are thinking that this has been happening for a while. (1200 miles on the car ) Ideas >? Does anyone have an Early 427R with a Pro-Products SFI balancer >? I do not remember seeing one on a Livonia Produced Motor. -- There have been a couple of hands on this thing prior to us so there is ANYTHING that could have happened. Your thoughts are welcome --Steve |
You have way to much timing should have no more than 32-34 degrees.
The heat is most likely from burning fuel in the exhaust header. I would find top dead and fix dist or what ever it needs to get timing right. I am guessing it will need about 14-16 inital and all in around 32-34. Good luck |
Odd balancer to be on there. Bet the timing marks are wrong...

As mentioned I would check top dead center and make sure the pointer is right. A lot of time when you have a lot of heat in the exhaust the timing is low. You say it will not idle below 37 to 38 degrees and this may another indication that the pointer is wrong. You did not say at what rpm you are checking the timing but if that is at idle the pointer has to be of or cam timing.
Good luck, Keith |
We figured it out with your help - The former owner was the victim of a undisclosed parts swap.
--someone pulled off the polished timing cover and livonia balancer and replaced it (them) with a dirt-cheapo import units, and for some reason used the livonia pointer, once we did the basics, TDC/TDC things started making sense. ( thank you Rick Parker and crew ) |
Thank you all again - car runs beautifully. -- it was a combination of things.
Car now pulls like an angry bull at full charge. |
