Looking for the definite answer on valve covers and roller rockers

My SPO came with a Roush 402R built from the Dart / 351W block. After hours of searching this forum and others, I am still in the dark about which aftermarket valve covers will fit without spacers.

The "tall" covers from Cobranda apparently don't fit (per my telephone call), even though the website says yes. Other posts seem to suggest that Ford's new line of valve covers will fit, even though their descriptions say that "some modification may be necessary to clear roller rockers."

Specifically, I would like to match my traditional black oval air cleaner with the finned black covers that say COBRA on them, but I'd hate to eat $150 - $200 getting the wrong ones (or having to buy them, then get spacers after all).

Any leads?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

I'll weigh in. I'm using Branda's "tall" covers with Comp Cams steel roller rockers; there's no interference. FWIW. Cheers, Tom

Try these: Cobra Valley's S/T Small Block Valve Covers

Note that they are available in different finishes.

I tried the Branda tall valve covers on my 420W which has stud girdles and they would not fit. I think they would have been tall enough except for the stud girdles.

As for the definitive answer, try this. Take some measurements on your valve train or your current valve covers to see height you need. Measure say, from across the gasket flanges to the bottom of the baffle. Then compare that to the same dimension on any new valve covers you're considering.

Post part numbers.

Here's an example of a cover listed on several sites that says it will clear. I can measure, of course, but the hard part is getting an inside measurement of a potential part off the web.

Thanks for the tips.

Benzito, you might try searching eBay for "Tall 351W valve covers", or a similar search. If you find something you like, you can then ask the seller to give you the flange to baffle measurement, if it's not already listed. I've had good responses from sellers there.

I have the spacers. No issues. Most people don't even notice them. I have the finned "Cobra" valve covers. See my gallery for pics.

The fly in the ointment is the baffle plate under the pcv valve hole on one cover and breather tube on the other. Different heads have the the gasket rails at different levels thus placing the valve covers higher or lower. Take some vertical measurements of the highest point of the rocker at full lift or the adjuster nut in relation to the gasket rail then get a rocker cover that will accept that dimension. Tweak acordingly. Sometimes a high quality 5/16 thick gasket will add just enough.

Those are the covers we use also but we run a Jessel shaft system for our rollers.

The cobra Valley covers worked for me.

I also use those valve covers. Dart heads, Comp roller rockers.

Here's a comparison picture of the tall Branda covers and the Ford 427 covers. I am using the Branda covers in this picture with an extra thick gasket on my 427W:

These are also 1.65 rockers with some trimming:

I replaced my Roush valve covers with the flat black ford valve covers that say
Cobra on them. No clearance problems.

Hi.

I've used these Ford Racing M-6582-F302 - Ford Racing Aluminum Valve Covers - Overview - SummitRacing.com stock height covers with 0.2" rubber gaskets, 0.6" valve lift & 1.6 ratio (Comp steel) RR's. No problem.

However- when the RR's were replaced with Jesel shafts, it was a tight fit... I had to grind off some "warts" (some kind off threaded pidestals for shielding cover) and give the splash shields a couple of bangs with the hammer. Worked well in the end.
