289 water jacket mismatch
I have had nothing but trouble with my small block head gaskets from day one. At some point in the near future I am going to pull the heads & have all of the "flat" surfaces checked. There has always been on thing that has made me go Hmmm & I've not thought to ask anyone if it makes a differrence on not. The water jackets above the piston, on the block, are kidney shaped. On the head it's a Round hole. The Block is a 64' & the Heads 63'. What sparked this is that I saw a block online where the hole is just the opposite & a set of heads, opposite of mine as well. Does this make a difference? I have the tools, I could theoretically bore out the holes in the head to match. Thoughts?

The holes in the gaskets are by design smaller to force the coolant entering the front of the block to make the journey to the rear at the block and enter the back of the heads still relatively cool enough to effectively cool the heads. So the holes in the head and block should be restricted by the gaskets anyway . Make sure the surface of the block is flat and square or you will continue to have leaks and blows....

I have a spare gasket, so I checked it. You are correct. There is a small hole.
So, next question. For orientation purposes, I could only find a high flow water pump when I was putting the block together. Is this going to cause any extra strain on the gasket? The problem I'm having is the gasket blowing between the piston & waterjacket. It has happened on both sides of the block now. |
I'll bet that the block needs to be surfaced

That's what I'm leaning towards, as well. Just trying to think everything through.
