This is a pretty trick engine goodie...

I've never seen this before: a timing pointer with a built-in LED that serves as a timing light. How cool is that?

Anyone use one of these? Does it work reasonably well?

I bought one a couple of years ago. It was a pain to get working. You have to use it in pitch darkness, otherwise you cannot see the light. Someday, when my car breaks down in the boonies it may be useful. But only if it's night time. Come to think of it, the batteries will probably be dead by then.

Vibration kills it over time

Dangerous Doug Vibes kill it over time. Had one for 4 years and it died. Not 100% sure if it was vibrations of motor or weather. Car used to be in an open trailer and went to St. Lious every year for 11 years. It rained every time I either went out or came home. Car was covered and sealed but everything was still soaked. Rick L. Ps I etch mark may distributor housing into the intake manifold. If this is tight the housing shouldn't move. If the timing changes it either the timing chain stretching or a gear problem between camshaft and distributor gears at idle.

The same way if you where to remove distributor

Dangerous Doug When the housing is all the way flat on the manifold and you have the base timing setup. I use #1 cylinder as setup. Make sure you have the phasing set for rotor to be in the middle on #1 contact on the distrib cap. I have this done by using an old MSD cap and using a dremial tool to open a slot between the coil terminal and the #1 terminal for the spark plug wire. I mark the inside of the distributor with a paint mark. Outside the distributor I etch a small line in the housing and the intake manifold. This way they both line up. If something changes with the timing, this is your first basic check of the 2 marks lining up. If the outter marks are not alignment, the housing moved and the hold down may not be tight enough. If the inner mark is off, possible broken pin in the gear. Crank motor and see if rotor spins. If you can spin rotor my hand, you have problem in motor. If rotor doesn't spin, oil pump could be seized, gears stripped between camshaft and distributor gears, bottom line enternal work. Hope this helps good luck. Ps wife said you have to regulate time better between her and mistress:eek::rolleyes:;):LOL::LOL: Rick L.

Same here, do it on all my vehicles.....once I get the timing where I want it, I either use a small chisel or punch and mark the distributor flange and an opposing mark on the block (small block engines).....a quick glance will tell if things have moved and if you have to remove the distributor later on, you have the reference mark to put in back in the same/correct place......

Which mistress? And for that matter, which wife?:D:D

Okay, I thought that's what you meant but wasn't certain. I concur: excellent idea---about the etch mark, not the mistress(es)!
