Plumbing SS Fuel Line to Fuel Pump
In the process of my Cobra build---I would like to connect a braided SS fuel line from the fuel tank to a mechanical fuel pump on the side of a 351 motor. The fuel pump has a flared end (see photo) and I want to connect it to the SS line via an AN fitting? Don't. Make a steel hardline all the way. Use isolated clamps along the chassis. Then a 6" approved 'rubber' connector from there to your pump flared barb.

SP, what you're showing there is referred to as a barb or nipple and if you so choose you could just use a worm type hose clamp in it. To make it pretty you could use something like this:

If you've got the AN line lined up & ready, I'd use a clamp of some kind, not an AN fitting. But, if you are insisting on AN.... Cut the flare off the fuel pump end. Install hard line adapter & flare once more. Put on AN hose end on hose and use the appropriate adapter from hose to fuel pump. (Hose look like AN6 and pump will be AN4? So then you need AN6 to AN4 male/male adapter....) |
I agree with the steel hardline. I ran 3/8 stainless from the tank to the pump to the carb.
I would recommend a flex link at the rear of the engine - about 6 to 8 inches. Just my opinion. :D |

This is an interesting discussion since I had a nasty fuel leak on a one year old Backdraft with a Roush 427.

I suggest not messing around with weird fittings and modifications to your existing fuel pump. For about $100 you can purchase a new fuel pump with the correct AN fittings for an SS line. You'll spend close to that on weird fittings to accommodate the mechanical Carter fuel pump in the picture anyway. Run AN fitting SS line up to the carb. I think this would be a more elegant solution to your problem.
