Help ident. Head`s on SBF 302

Hi,
Currently I try to find out which parts my engine has got. The heads do not have outside visible number or identification. The intake manifold is from Ford Motorsport. The cam is from Comp Cam part n° 31-760-8. Maybe someone can help me identify the heads. Thanks, Rico |
Pop the valve cover off and you should find some identifying markings.

DD, I know, but its to early to take off the covers. No spare gaskets:(. And, at the moment I like to drive the car, becauce I haw to make the AFR Test with the LM1.
After surfing the internet, I think ther are a kind of older Ford ALU Heads. Rico |
Someone has replaced the cup plugs with threaded plugs (good idea) and machined them flat with the surface. Never seen them as OEM on SBF heads.

My heads are older, but are clearly marked "65" between the rocker arms

You could check here....... Ford casting ID numbers and part identification info for Mustang Shelby parts might help,but it is for older parts, or just take pictures of all the number/letters you can find on the head and post them here,or go to a Ford dealer parts department with them, they could look up the numbers..... Your heads look like some late 80's to early 90's Ford aluminum heads, possibly J302 heads,which BTW are pretty good....... Back then,Ford did have a fair amount of over the counter performance items for small blocks..... David |
As I recall the J302 heads were originally made by Alan Root and were marketed by Ford Motorsport in the late 80's. They were the first Aluminum heads for SBF but didn't have a real good intake port on them and consequently didn't receive a lot of development. Later various makes addressed the port deficiency and made great strides.

Good advice here on where to go to identify the markings.
One thought on those machined plugs: if somebody went through the trouble/cost of fitting and machining those plugs, I'd be willing to bet there has been some porting/polishing/valve work done as well. Interesting... DD |

The car was build in 89/90. NAF Tag says 89. Engine build in 19..? The only advice I haw about the engine is a WORK Order Tag. See foto. Engine quotet at 400 HP. But reading your replays its possible they are Alan Root Heads. As you made me curious I will take off the covers next weekend. Rico |

So, the cat is out the bag. I moved the cover from the passenger side Head, and on the fotos you can see the results.
I think the Heads are not bad. The engine sound`s and run`s well and it makes not problem to rev them up to 7000 rev`s.:D Some coment about the stamped numbers on the Heads? Valve diameter? Best way to check? Rico |
Although it looks like J602,I'm sure it's sure the casting and those should be J302 heads, not bad heads at all.....
Valves are most likely 1.94 intake and 1.5 exhaust.....unless the builder put in larger valves,then they would most likely be 2.02 intake and 1.6 exhaust... If your happy with the engine and it revs to 7000 rpms, leave everything alone and enjoy it....... David |
