carbon on piston tops

I'm rebuilding an engine and would like to take advantage of some downtime by cleaning up my components that will go back in the engine. Does anyone know how to get the carbon buildup off the top of the pistons? Someone wrote on some other site to soak them in Acetone. I tried that and it didn't work at all.

On a weird side note, I'm designing a billet aluminum 302 for Kirkham Motorsports. I'd be curious what improvements you would advocate putting into a custom designed engine. I'm speaking mainly of the block. The components will be off the shelf. Things like piston cooling or what size of oil galley's. Stuff like that.

I always use abbrassive pads like the 3M nylon things. At the end of a high speed rotating thingy it works well. Soaking in thinner or aceton help.

Clean out the ring lands as well and be sure the rings move freely.

Easy Offf oven cleaner, then a wire wheel in a drill motor.

Bead blast with fine glass beads. You use a regular sand blaster only you use the glass beads rather than sand. If you get the right beads and the right air pressure it will not cut into the metal. Experiment on a piece of scrap first.

We used to break one of the rings in half. Use the sharp edge as a scraped on the piston top.The clean end of the broken ring fits perfectly in the ring groove (land) and this can be used to scrape the groove. Takes a bit of time though.........

Rick,

I would do it that way, but the yelling would be a problem.

I'll never forget the time she came home and I had an old M1 rifle stock in the oven on one of her good cookie sheets. The heat did a nice job in getting the linseed oil out.
