I had a problem with one of those oval Cobra air cleaners years ago. Caused a higher RPM miss because it didn't breath worth a darn. Replaced it with a K&N and never looked back.

I just bought a K&N. It has been sitting in a box on my floor for a week...

I agree to check the rev limiter chip in the msd box before you mess with anything else.
Too big of a coincidence that the motor cuts out right at 4000 rpm.

Yep. That's first on my list. Only I mounted the box so I can't get to the limiter easily. Gotta find a tiny screwdriver and a small mirror. Only need to stop working long enough to check it. Flu season ROCKS!

Whats your rev limiter set for in the 6AL? I would hope it would be higher that 4K but worth checking if you havent already.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner! :D - Hopefully.
The rev limiter was set at 4500. I remember (now..) that I had set it low so I wouldn't over-rev it during the first few hundred miles. I haven't gotten to test it yet since I didn't get home from work until after 10pm. I set it for 6k. Since this is my first ever engine build, I'm not sure what my redline should be.
I did check the dizzy center post and installed the K&N air cleaner. No burn marks on the underside of the air cleaner. Now to set the timing back like it was and hopefully get a drive in tomorrow to test it.
Thanks to all!

6 grand is probably about right for rpm for amildly built motor. you can go higher if you have the right parts-ask your engine builder. how tal is you filter element you should check and see how close your filter lid is to the carb.

Unfortunately, that's me. This is my first engine build. I will try 6k and see how it does. I'm going to the dyno in two weeks.

drive it without the air cleaner.
We had a friend with a 351W with a 8" S&H air cleaner with a paper filter and mess wire support. Motor would not rev pass 4300 till we removed the cleaner. Then it would go to 6000.

Solved!
SOLVED! It was the rev limiter. Runs smoothly and pulls up to the 6k mark. Scheduled for a carb tune next.
THANKS for all the support!
