351w #1 cylinder, .350" down the barrel, $3k for block & rotating assy, $200 shipping, and 120 miles round trip to pick it up, and this shows up.

Is it a pit, nick, or ?? How deep? Does it have any raised edges on it?

vector1 02-19-2013 07:32 AM

no raised nicks or edges, i think it is where the piston ring was located when it sat previous to the teardown and machine work. it is .030 over now, i don't think .040 would have cleaned it up. carl at cnc said he has done a few with no problems, so i guess i'll go with it. keith craft said it was ok also, course his money. just real frustrating trying to do a meticulous build and this happens.

blykins 02-19-2013 07:41 AM

I would run it...

The piston ring won't catch it and it will be fine.

It's very, very hard to get a perfect cylinder on every cylinder on every block you come across.

thank you, everything looks superb otherwise.

What you are talking about,is it the dark horizontal mark on the cylinder wall??????

If so,I've seen this a time or two,as long as you can't feel it with your finger nail or hang your nail on it, you'll be fine......

i can catch a nail on it, i was wondering about blow by the ring or breaking a ring on it, but a few have said run it, so.......

blykins 02-19-2013 10:37 AM

You can catch a nail on it because it's a little blemish, not because it's raised.

I think porosity. I'd mag and sonic wall it. But I agree it can run like that-unless it goes to the core of the earth.

DAVID GAGNARD 02-19-2013 11:04 AM

The 351-W block in my street car had 2 marks just like yours, but longer,40 overbore and they still showed,I put that engine together in 1995, still going strong to this day with no problems............

correct

Barry_R 02-19-2013 04:41 PM

I'd rather not see that - but it ain't the end of the world. Probably rust from when the block sat for an extended period. As long as it pressure checks OK I would run it.
