Help me understand stroker kits
 

I purchased a kit and am trying to make sure I did it right. I'm not quite ready to panic, but want to make sure its right before I take the parts to the machine shop and make them unreturnable.

The packing list from scat tells me to unpack everything and check it with what I ordered to make sure it is right. In the process of doing just that, I may have found an error, but am not sure I'm reading it right.

I ordered a stroker kit for a 351W to go to 408. I ordered a 28oz imbalance, 28oz imbalance flywheel, and 28oz imbalance damper.

When I got the kit from Scat, it has crank # 9-251-400-6200-2100W. When I go to scat's website (click here, click on Ford, Crankshafts, Cast Series 9000, scroll down, 6th from the bottom) it lists this crank as "Neutral Bal Int".

Can I use this neutral balance interanl crank with my 28oz flywheel and 28oz damper?

If I click on Rotating Assemblies, Small Block 351, then scroll down to the kit I ordered (part 1-94306 - Inclcrprb - does this mean includes crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings?), it doesn't list this kit as internal or external, but the column header for Compl (complete kit?) shows 1-94306BE. I think that means balanced externally.

So, what is the difference between a bare crank that is internal balanced, and a kit that uses that crank that has an external balance if used in the complete kit? What is in the complete kit that is not in the kit I received? :JEKYLHYDE

What Length rod are you using? I believe the additional weight of the longer rod (if being used) allows weight to be taken out of the Harmonic Balancer or Flywheel in an effort to go towards Neutral Balance.

They are 6.2 inch rods.

can you return the 28oz imbalance flywheel, and 28oz imbalance damper.
and buy zero balance flywheel and damper?

Your best bet is to call Scat and talk it over with them. The internals and externals have to match.

Seagull is correct. Go to the source. And on most flywheels and dampners the weights can be removed for neutral balance

I asked the same question to my engine builder, i built a 351 cleveland to a 408, used scat rotating assembly, i was told to buy a 28 oz imbalanced flywheel, when i asked the builder as to why he said he always has to balance engines even if they say it's balanced, and also it is easier to balance the rotating assembly with the imbalanced flywheel as opposed to adding malory if needed, i quess he knows what he is doing as my motor in my mustang made 830 hp and the one in my cobra made 547hp. chances are you might have to balance your damper also. I hope i explained it right or i am going to look pretty dumb!
