Coolant leak
Experiencing slight coolant leak between head and block #1 cylinder right side for the second time. Superformance GT40, Roush 427SR, Dart iron block, AFR heads. First leak at 18K miles. Removed heads, had resurfaced, new Felpro 4.125" bore gaskets (slightly oval ones). Block surface fine. OK for 2500 miles, now slight leak at same location. Any suggestions? Retorque? Thought Dart iron blocks didn't require head bolt sealer? If retorque fails any suggestions on head gasket installation. Noticed on 1st disassembly that those Felpro gaskets brinell aluminum of head.

Re Brinelling of the head. Find a head gasket that uses a pre-flattend sealing ring around the cylinder. An example of such for a 4.00 bore fitament in Felpro is 1011-1 and 1011-2 (pre-flattened.

If you are absolutely sure it's coming from the head gasket, switch to a Cometic MLS gasket.

And what head bolts/studs are you using? |
The Felpro gaskets 1022 and 1023 are pre flattened, but still brinell the aluminum. Using ARP head bolts. Wasn't sure about Cometic-thought head and block surfaces had to be ultra smooth?
I have used Cometic on other engines and like them. |
You sure it's not something else leaking and running down?

Yes, if the gasket isn't sealing. You can also have a thermostat housing leak or similar.

I once had a leak that showed itself in the same area. It didn't leak when the engine was warm, but it had a wet spot right on the head gasket in the front corner when the engine was cold. I assumed the head gasket was failing, but since it didn't seen to leak while the engine was running I put off fixing it for a while. While doing a cam change, I found that the leak was actually was caused by an intake manifold gasket that had been crushed at the water passage. This was a 302 with 351 Windsor heads.

I had spotty coolant on the block sides, near the water pump and at the back of the block. IT WAS AN INTAKE GASKET. Each of the ports were deteriorated due to the intake not torqued properly. R&R the intake gaskets with Roush spec'd metal lined gaskets and all set. Jeff |
