8.8 Differentials
I’m looking for a good 8.8 differential and have searched some threads. Seems like the 4 most mentioned are -
DPI Platinum Track Torsen T2R differential Ford Racing T2 Torsen Detroit Truetrac Cost ranges from ~$450 to $950 with the first 3 being torque-biasing versions and the Trutrac a limited slip. Who has played around with some of these and what would your recommendation be for best road course/auto-x performance? _ |
I visit another site where there are a lot of racers. Torsen style for autocross, Truetrac for street or drag racing.
The curves create a lot of friction in the Truetrac style and all claim it will slow you down. |
I faced this issue recently, albeit for my 9" Ford rear end, and I went with a PowerTrax No-Slip. For those not in the know, the No-Slip is a civilized form of locker you can install without having to have your ring & pinion set up.
From the Powertrax Web site (http://www.powertrax.com/index.php/p...trax-no-slip): "It combines the smooth operation of a limited-slip differential, with the traction performance of a locking differential. A precise synchronization mechanism eliminates the ratcheting sounds typical of other locking differentials. Special gear and spring design reduce the backlash and therefore driveline windup. Only ultra strength material is used which is 67% stronger than titanium. Installation is simple because no ring and pinion set-up is required." |
Check out Wavetrac <= clickable. They have the most impressive of the torque biasing differentials available. They also have the strongest with 12 pinions vs six or eight in the other manufacturers diffs.
In addition to being very strong, they dynamically bias the wheel torque with their patented wavetrac mechanism without preloading the diffs internals like all other designs. Your car will feel much more neutral going through the turns with this style of differential. Very impressive unit not a very inexpensive unit. Ed p.s. They make a 31 spline 8.8 IRS version and a 31 or 33 spline 8.8 straight rear axle version and all versions carry a lifetime warrantee even if you race them! |
The TruTrac is a not a limited slip, it's torque bias. I've never heard of it slowing down the ford guys in autocross by anything worth mentioning, as this is the first time I have heard this.

I used the Ford Racing T2 Torsen beefed up with 31 spline axles for several years in road racing and never had any problems with it. But as I said, it was a built up one that the rear end shop I used recommended and it was about as close to a locker as you could get and not have the locker noise. So I don't know how the stock T2 would stand up.

Thanks for the input, I have a couple of good choices to decide on. Truetrac may perform like a torque bias differential, but Eaton and Truetrac distributors refer to it as a limited slip. Have read good feedback on the Trutrac as well as others. From the web -

I used the Torsten t2 in a the black car, no complaints. That thing is a chunk, very heavy.

Seems between the two Torsten types (T2 and TR2), for sweeping turns some like the T2 better than the T2R, for auto-x the T2R seems to be preferred. Just opinions on the net. I need to go out and count splines, I assume 31 is standard for the JBL comp.

If money is not a concern. I would give strong consideration to an OS Giken. One of the best all around LSDs available. Its offered in a 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. ;)

I run a Truetrac with very good results in Autox. It's a helical gear Torsen style. I believe it's 3.0 bias.

I forgot to add in my previous post that I also had an Eaton unit that was beefed up so none of what I had was actually factory, but it stood up for years with no problems and I drove the car hard. Now my cousin has it and that rear end is still in it and doing well but he doesn't race it.
