For you 289 guys....
I just got in a really nice C5 6-bolt 289 block that is currently standard bore, along with a standard 289 crankshaft and a set of 289 rods.
If you're wanting a period-correct short block for your 289 replica, this would be a really nice foundation: *Block baked and steel abrated, honed with torque plates, mains align honed, square decked *Crankshaft machined *Rods reconditioned *Clevite main/rod bearings *Racetec forged pistons with a modern Mahle metric ring pack *Felpro rear main seal *Durabond camshaft bearings *Block painted, brass freeze plugs installed *Custom Lykins Motorsports solid flat tappet camshaft *Ford Racing double roller timing set with ARP camshaft bolt *Rotating assembly balanced *Short block assembled, camshaft degreed $3299 A small deposit would put your name on the parts and on my build list. I also have a nice set of 289 cylinder heads that could be freshened up to make a long block. |
Period correct is a five bolt block, no?

No....both 5 and 6 bolt blocks were used.
And BTW, I said "period correct", not numbers matching. A factory 289 block would be more "correct" than a 302 or a 351. |
to be period correct an automatic transmission should be used with a 6-bolt 289 😉

No, my 1965 Comet Calentie had a 6 bolt block that came from the factory in it.

It is known for sure that 42 new Cobras were finished with odd ball five bolt engines assembled after the start of six bolt engine production. Ford did not serial number them but Shelby American gave them individual numbers. These engines contained both 1964 and 1965 model year parts. This is not in the Registry. I didn’t know it myself until we bought a car with one of these engines and I started researching them. Five bolt 221/260/289 engines were made for 1962-64 model years. Six bolt 289 engines were made for the 1965-67 model years. All Cobras except those 15 with automatic transmissions had 1962-64 model year engines (XHP-260 and HP260 made during 1962, 1963 model year HP289s, 1964 model year HP289s, and the odd 42 engines tagged as being 1964 model year engines but containing some 1965 model year parts). That’s the short version. My decades in collecting research notes on “Cobra engines” is currently 76 pages long. |

There are still lots of the five bolt engines around. They can be found complete for $350 or less.

Heck I have 2 260 builders I would let go for $200 each. I would trade both of them for that lump of aluminum Rodknok has under his hood.:)
