347 stroker oil pan selection
 

After hitting the drain plug off the road with my stock oil pan (T&L 347 stroker) I am here again looking for advice. I only had 3.5" of clearance with the stock pan so I am looking for a pan with a maximum depth of 7.5". Can anyone recommend the most reasonably priced option (model number) if there are more than one to select from? It doesn't matter to me what brand name it is as I only do a few hundred km's per year, no racing etc, I just want to get it back on the road.

I ran a Champ oil pan because I had 3 1/2" clearance also, It's baffled and has trap doors too.

Is your ride height to low?
Is your motor mounted low in the frame?
How much clearance do you have between the air cleaner and hood?

A stock pan should work on any Cobra.

Champ Oil Pans road race pan is 7" and holds 8 quarts of oil. You may need a new oil pickup and dipstick assembly too.

Suggest you look at aroilpans.com Their number 407--GT-40 pan ($520). Armando has made quality pans for years and I have never had any problems with them. #407 is 14" L X 6.5" D X 11/5" W. I believe it is a 7 quart pan. Call him and tell him your needs.

X2 on the Armando pans. I needed a special pan for the Dart block and I went with a marine-style pan; it's the same low depth front to back, no humps or bumps, holds 8 quarts and, even with all that it was way cheaper than Canton. The new pick-up was included. I'm satisfied.

Since your are after a Stock style pan at the lowest cost I'd go with a Summit Racing PN SUM-G3520B (rear sump) or PN SUM-G3534 (front sump) both are $45.00 Both are Approx 7.75" deep

Thanks guys for all your help. I will research these options and let you know how it goes. It took me 12 years to finish the car, this may take me 2 months! I also have to raise my front end an inch (coil overs) but my air filter is only an inch from my hood so I don't think there are any other adjustments to make. Once I raise my base pan my bell housing is the lowest point at 4".

I bought an Armando's pan for my BBF from Armando's ( Armando's Oil Pans )

Here's what I have:
- Sump depth (1/4" above the bottom of my frame rails): Front - 8 5/8", Rear - 7"
- 20" long sump
- Drain plugs: 1 at front, 1 on the side of the sump, as far back on the driver's side as possible
- 1/2" NPT bung at front for oil temperature sender
- 3/8" dipstick tube on passenger side
- No puke tank fitting

Armando did some custom work on my pan and didn't charge me any extra. Gotta love that. FWIW, my clearance issue is now the bellhousing, not the oil pan.

Rumour has it Armando worked for Aviaid before striking out on his own.

Great pan, well built. Pan capacity is about 11 quarts. I put the oil pan on a level surface (bottom surface is parallel to frame rails and almost perfectly horizontal to ground) and filled it to the level I wanted with water. I carefully measured the water as I filled it, so that was easy. Once the pan was installed I filled it with the same amount of oil, inserted the dipstick (generic dipstick from Summit Racing) and marked the dipstick at the level indicated by the oil.

The only thing I'd change would be heavier pan rails, but I'm not sure anyone builds them heavier. Regardless, they have not been a source of leakage. Photos of the pan at https://goo.gl/photos/LV32eSaJ4uwCyRWY9

BTW, I went with the dipstick fitting in the pan and capped the one on the timing cover with a push on vinyl cap.

I put in the champ pan also The baffles and trap doors. I shimmed the 347 up about 3/16 to be even with the cross member to be safe. A 3 inch large round air cleaner works. Had the oval one with shorter filter also. The 8 quarts is nice. Good luck

I had a 4.1" stroke windsor built. I found that Kevco makes a full length sump pan, F506, that holds 9 quarts and is 7" deep. Mine is baffled for road course use. It has worked great in my Unique, no problems at all. Gave me another 1-1/2" of pan clearance over my old windsor.

Kevco F505 is the 302 equivalent.

Another thought that you may consider. I never had any problem with my pan hitting while running hard but I had a steel skid plate made that mounts about an inch and a half in front of the pan and then curves under it. That way if something did hit it would hit the plate and not the pan. I did scrape the plate once when racing and then again when going over a huge speed bump at about 2 miles per hour but it saved the pan.
