289 cores in stock....
I've got some 289 blocks, cranks, cylinder heads, etc. in here in case anyone would be interested in a period correct 289 build.
These would start at around 300 hp with a factory cylinder head, hydraulic roller, etc., and would go up from there. We have made 450 hp with the 289's, using ported C5 heads, and a .500" solid flat tappet camshaft. This is David Cobb's 289, based off of the factory crankshaft, a little longer rod with shorter piston combination, and World Products cast iron heads. Blue Thunder Shelby style intake, with a custom hydraulic roller camshaft. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e383da9f_c.jpg That little engine made 310 hp @ 5800 rpm with 315 lb-ft of torque. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...147bdf62_c.jpg That one is a little more higher end build, built for a FIA rules Cobra in the UK. The rules dictate we have to use a .500" lift solid flat tappet camshaft, factory cylinder heads, either a factory style dual plane intake or Webers, etc. This one, with ported C5 heads, cranked out almost 450 hp. We have seen a spike in customers wanting "period correct" engines for their Cobra builds....been doing a lot of 289's and 427's lately. The good thing is that we can introduce modern components into 60's platforms: modern ring packs, roller camshafts, modern carburetors and induction, etc. |
Nice work Brent! They look great.

Thank you sir.

Nice to see the SBF getting the attention it deserves ; D
Looks good, Brent- |
Sweet. What's the red line on these?
|
As far as what kind of rpms the bottom ends would handle, both engines would be capable of 7500-8000 rpm.
David's 289 was done at 5800, so if he were getting on it hard with a quick shift, he'd probably shift at 6200-6300. The road race engine peaked the horsepower at 7000 rpm. That's the beauty of these kinds of builds. They look stock appearing on the outside, but are built extremely strongly and modernly on the inside. |
When I had finally gotten the DFI working on my SB427 driving on the street I could just feel the cobwebs building up... That thing really wanted to run at 5000+ RPM. So I swore that if I ever got another Cobra it would be a small block car - you can rev it up and have just the right HP to the wheels in the lower ranges PLUS they have plenty of grunt at the top end.

Thanks for the posts, can’t wait to see David’s finished product with the motor in it. Nice engine work as usual.

Brent,
Do you tune the Webers yourself, or use someone else for that? Jim |
Well, as a general rule, I don't like Webers. I can make more power, both average and peak with a single carb setup. But the ones that I have to order for these rules engines, I use Inglese and then fine tune from there.
|
I know your preference for 4 barrels over the Webers, but refreshing a 289 race engine with Webers when it is time fora rebuild is not out of the question for you, right?
