Rec'd the intake Friday. Mary Price is a sweet lady, sold me the intake at the old price.
All prepped just need the carbs. I don't really want to wait till June though. Maybe I'll get two 1904's.

It shows you how far we have come. 1963 Cobra 271HP and 312 torque! And that was at the crank! I have a few friend that have or had 302 in their trucks, a couple made it to 300,000 with just basic maintenance, plus they were still running when they sold them!

[quote=Sycraft;1493995]Ok, had car calibrated. Steady speed at all RPMs were at a steady 12.5, but when WOT it goes rich. Has .077 secondaries and I did not have any smaller ones to try. I have ordered and assortment of secondary jets to try a few steps smaller to see what results I get. Car runs great overall and starts and pulls hard, other than being Fat WOT. Secondaries vacuum butterflies are opening, had to lighten the springs to allow them to operate. Any suggestions on what Secondary jetting to try first, AFR is at 11.4 at WOT. I have ordered .075,.074,.072,.070

I'm getting ready to order carbs and jets. Where did you end up on the secondary jet size?
The 1904 has .095 pri, .077 sec jets but since my motor is a 408W I'm thinking I'll start with pair of 1902s which have .095 pri, .095 sec jets. + they're $80 cheaper each as well.

Sycraft 04-21-2022 08:07 PM

never messed with secondaries, runs great overall. I was afraid to mess up the rest of the settings. I do have the secondary alternate sizing though

spdbrake 04-23-2022 08:37 AM

Ordered the 1904 carbs from Speedway Motors. Luckily they had them in stock.
Making progress.

All installed. She fired right up and idled at 850. Finished the idle mixtures, I still need to do a drive with the AFR gauge installed. My Fuel Press Regulator took a dump while I was adjusting it. Got another on order.

Finally drove the car with the AFR gauge installed. Running rich in cruise and off idle at 10.5-11.5. Pretty good at WOT at 12.5-13.0 though.

Not real surprised though since I'm running synced linkage and not progressive.

Have some metering rods and jets inbound from from Summit. Following the tuning chart and ordering one setup at a time since I'm doing two carbs.

Threw in one stage hotter NGKs (5 instead of 6)for now until the Jets show up.

Sycraft 06-13-2022 07:03 PM

Awesome, I see you did the same thing and safety wired the choke on carb 2. I am running synced too, no performance with the progressive link.

spdbrake 06-16-2022 08:56 AM

Yes I wired both chokes open (both are 1904 carbs).
A came across this in depth Edelbrock dual quad tuning guide today.
https://boyzunderthehood.com/wp-cont...rburetors-.pdf

New jets and rods are installed. Waiting for the weather to cool a bit. It hit 100F here yesterday but with humidity saturation rated it at 110F. Not a record, but I could have sworn I was back in Florida (native). That's why I finally left for good, and here it is.
My garage has A/C at least.

I had both the 289 roadster and 289 FIA out yesterday. Just saying ;)

Brave soul you are Bill. lol

I was trying to talk my C/P (wife) into reading the AFR gauge for me yesterday evening but to no avail.

spdbrake 06-20-2022 09:09 AM

New jets and rods turned out perfect. Once I got the idle mixtures redone it sat at 14.5. Sorta scared me. Driving light cruise at 13.0 , mild acceleration at 12.5 and WOT @11.0 Plugs are a beautiful light tan VS my previous gas soaked black.

See my post #6 with my graph, Thoughts?

spdbrake 06-21-2022 06:20 AM

It looks fine, but it starts at 2774rpm and I don't know where he had the gas pedal set at.
Typically I try and tune AFR for Idle, off-idle tip-in, part throttle light cruise, mild acceleration and WOT last.
My car lives most of its life everywhere but WOT.

I'd check your plugs. If they're happy, leave it be.

Even though you and I have the same carbs, the tuning changes considerably due the the CU, heads, cam, etc... The carb just flows whatever is asked of it. So my going to smaller primary jets and rods does not necessarily mean your engine needs the same tweaks also.

spdbrake 06-26-2022 11:10 AM

I switched to a couple Moroso 8.5" air cleaners.

My Aeroflows I got from AU have about 30 miles on them if you're interested.

Need more info.

This is awesome. Just a few questions.
1. Would like to know where Spdbrake got your alternator and serpentine setup. Also curious about the PCV system.
2. Wondering which jets and rods you ended up with.
I'm almost done with assembly on my 408w and 351w long blocks. Found a new engine shop after the guy that built my shortblocks went out of biz.(don't get me started)**) just need alternators, starters, and pulleys. Then it's off to the dyno hopefully by the end of this month. The 351 is 10.3:1, 235/239 cam, and a pair of Holley 450's on a Price manifold. But the 408 is 10.7:1, 244/250 cam, and the 1903/1904 setup on a air gap. I would really like to go in with the Edelbrock setup close, as this new(to me) dyno guy claims to be a holley expert, but clueless with Edelbrocks.

The Edelbrock's are super easy to tune and don't require removal of the carb to re-jet, change rods etc,,,
Carb tuning guide here: https://edelbrock-instructions-v1.s3...ning-guide.pdf
See pages 33&34 for the 1903/1904 carbs.
Read the tuning guide I posted a few responses up. It is detailed.
Since you'll be at at Dyno shop you will need to bring Two #1940 tuning kits (2 carbs) which has an assortment of rods, springs, jets.

Me telling you my jet/rod size on my 408 is not useful for your 351, cams/heads/intakes/displacement all different. I feel I'd be wasting your time.

Alternator: I use a Bosch 3G 95Amp AL75522N I like the angled support better as it keep the alternator lower on the head plus the clocking of the wiring connections are low and outboard right side of the alternator out of view.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Pulleys: I use the March Performance Hi-flow kit. #1675. Just more gpm for traffic and my engine does not live at high rpm.
https://marchperformance.com/ford/fo...e-pulleys.html
These are clockwise pulley sets.
Ensure your timing cover and water pump are both clockwise.

You can run a CCW pump and timing cover, the water pump pulley will be smooth and not ribbed.

Alternator bracket: March Performance, #30055. There are several companies making clones of this setup.
https://marchperformance.com/ford/fo...t-30025-c.html
I modified my turnbuckle rod length to tuck the alternator closer to the intake radiator hose.

PCV breathers: I got bored so ditched my screened breather for a catch can. There's never anything in it and my rings are tight so no blowby.

I typically have 1-2 projects on the car every month. Always evolving.

jolsen42 07-06-2022 05:18 PM

I used the Price Motorsports 351 dual quad intake with Holley 1848-1 carbs. Ran like a raped ape.

Just to clarify, the Edelbrock setup is going on my 408. The heads are Victor Jr's. I ordered 2 of the 1940 kits from Summit. BOTH freaking kits came in already opened/used (one kit the person using it had dirty hands). Summit sent out replacement kits next day, then the warehouse forgot to send them on a Friday, so it ended up taking til the following week to get them, but they're here and ready. My 351 has the Price setup with Holleys and Promaxx heads.

spdbrake 07-07-2022 06:01 AM

I have Victor Jr heads as well. Just the cams are different. 235/238 @ .050, 299/302 dur, lift I=.573 E=.582, LSA 112, 10in of vac best case.
Timing at 12deg initial, all in at 3000, 36deg full.

I only switched the primaries jets, rods,

#4 on the tuning plot page 33 of the tuning guide.
part#1424 (.089") primary jets
part#1445 (.065"x.047") rods
Just switched yesterday from orange (stock 5hg) step-up springs to yellow (4hg) to see if the orange springs are lifting the rods and adding to the rich.
Have not driven yet.

Linkage: Holley Sniper dual quad kit. Use the 7.25" rod. for the Price intake, 5" will work on the Edelbrock intake (I think) https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SNE-20-43

Linkage bushings: 2 each kits. You only need the washer and step bushing in the kits. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRG-1512

I use heat shrink on the rod jam nuts/shaft to prevent loosening.
