You can call me biased but I like these motors.
Chev LS1 small block runs 6.125" rods from the factory yet the whole engine assembly is still more compact than the Ford. A fully dressed LS1 only weighs 400lbs. The factory rods are good for 500+ HP. The factory crank is regularly pushed to 600+HP in blown aplications. The deep skirted aluminium block and 6 bolt mains make for a very strong bottom end. The LS1 is being regularly bored and stroked to 427 cubic inch using the factory block. 454 versions have been built using the stronger C5R block. LS1 runs symetrical port heads. Cam button? the factory roller cam don't need no stinkin cam button. Cheers |
Are we talking about 351w vs 350 or 351w vs LS1?

My references in my previous posts have all been to the latest generation small block chevy (LS1).
I think people generalise a bit sometimes when they get into these Ford Vs Chev debates. The truth is that all of the powerplants from the various manufacturers out there have their good points and bad points. People can wave the flag for their favourite brand but in the end most of the modern V8 motors are well engineered and can do the job asked of them. I can see this argument going on well into the next century "I like the Ford engine because it has overhead grease widgets so it must be better than the Chev engine because it only has ceramic doodad injectors."... "Well I reckon the new Toyota engine is the business because it's got triple flux capacitors and a fusion doover". Get over it guys it's just an engine. People are going to choose the engine that suits them, be it the original style or something else. Cheers |
Ford engine..............Cobra
Chevrolet engine......Corvette |
Just a bit of mischief guys, I use a Lexus Quad cam V8. 6 bolt mains, stock bottom end will take 800 plus HP and will rev to 8000. Light (385 lbs all up) and cheap as hell.
That should get you Ford and Chevy guys going....... |
Welcome to the forum Steve,
You need to get over to the Aussie section and check out some of the Lexus V8 powered weapons. I had a ride in Scott Hampsons (OZVENOM) Turbo Lexus Cobra at last years nationals. That thing is a beast as the number plates suggest. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d..._cobra-med.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...weapon-med.jpg Cheers |
Hey Aussie Mike ;
Are you using Kumho tires? |
Hi V-8,
I've got Sumitomo tyres on mine (315/35/17). From the pictures it looks like Scott is running Kumhos on his Turbo Lexus Cobra though. I think he's got some new wheels now with much wider rubber. With the comparitively narrow Kumhos, traction was non-existent when he took me for a spin last time. Cheers |
Lexus motors, Kumho and Sumitomo tires...are these Cobras or Jobras?
Just kidding. Enjoy them. TURK |

I think Kumhos are from Korea so they could be Kobras Cheers |
At DVSF III "street drags" one red cobra was particularly impressive. Onlookers started asking each other "what's under the hood". First whispers of "Chevy" then "502 Chevy". The radar said it was the fastest there. Under the hood was a very ordinary looking sbc! With close to 300 Ford powered cars there one would have expected a different result.
I don't recall any of the 60s production cobras(race or street) having sbc, bbc, 351w, 351c, 302sbf, Y-block, 460, 427SOHC, V-10, 426 hemi, or 231 V-6. To my mind only 260 and 289 sbfs and 427/428 FEs can claim to be "correct". Seems to me that "correct" engines would have correct internals and externals, not just correct blocks. No 408s,514s or Vortecs. Pay your money, take your pick, and have fun with what you build. Albright42 |
Mr. Albright:
The "original" Cobra's have always said "powered by Ford". They were sold through Ford dealerships with Ford engine's. There was a 390 powered Cobra and a 351 powered Cobra made back in the day also. |
Sorry Bandit, not being a FoMoCo type I was unaware that the 351c or 351w existed that far back....I thought that they were more modern designs. Was the Cobra(s) with a 351 available for sale or just a factory toy? If we look close enough there probably was an "original" with a 406FE, flathead, or Y-block. I've been under the impression that Cobra customers in the 60s didn't always get what they were expecting (390 or 428 vs 427, etc) Please correct my misconceptions.
Also that Chevy in the fast Cobra wasn't totally ordinary looking...it had Ford valve covers grafted onto it. As I said before: Pay your money, take your pick, and have fun with what you build. Albright42 |
I wasn't aware of a 351 powered original. Was it built that way or modified by a subsequent owner? I'd be keen to find out more.
Just imagine if the Cobras had continued production into the early 70's we could have seen Boss 302 motors and 351 Clevelands wedged into them. Or how about the mighty Shotgun Boss 429 motor! Cheers |
Mike,
The 351 Cobra people refer to was not originally built with a 351. In the Shelby Cobra Gold Portfolio, 1962 - 1969 on pages 70 & 72 it has the story plus pictures. The car belonged to Shelby himself and he took it to Mike McCluskey in Torrance, Calif, for the work. A 72 Boss 351 was installed along with a beefed up 67 Ford C-4 automatic transmission. There were some other modifications made to make the engine and headers fit. They even put a 351 emblem on the front fender where the engine or body emblem normally goes. I think this car has been changed back to the original 289 setup but don't know for sure. Ron (CW) would be the one that could answer that for you. Ron :) |
