GT40 Turbo Swirl heads vs Performer
Does anyone have any comments on the GT40 Turbo Swirl heads M6049-Y303 compared to the Edelbrock 60329 Performer heads?
I am matching the heads to the Edelbrock 2121 performer manifold , Edelbrock 600 carb and Edelbrock 2122 cam (already bought). The pieces will be going into a '70 302. The Turbo swirls are on sale at Hawaii Racing and are currently $200 less than the Edelbrocks, but I am concerned about match up with my other components. Specs seem quite similar. Those heads are fine for a mild 302 in my opinion. The E's will flow more and make a little more HP though. GT40Y's are on the small side for 351W's and big cam / breathing 302's. They will fit fine with that manifold. The only thing I am not certain about is the differences between old 302 blocks versus the newer 5.0 stuff. I believe the only real differences are old 302's are non roller cam blocks and have a different firing order; neither of these differences will affect head choice by the way. To be safe, call ford tech and make sure the those heads will bolt on with no issues

Thanks Curt. Any idea what kind of HP I would give up with the Ford heads compared to the Edelbrocks?

You are in luck, Muscle Mustang & Fast Ford has been testing all the cylinder heads in the last several issues. 2-3 months ago was the entry level heads. I am traveling right now, but will look it up this weekend for you. Or...maybe someone else here can post for you. Make sure you get the entry 302 test. The magazine is also testing intermediate and full blown stuff. The E's will probably make 6-12 more hp. I think the AFR 165 head is the best and I know it made the most HP in the test I cited above. Here is a summary of the test. Motor was a 306 running a comp cam XE264HR with 512 lift & 212/218 duration, Edelbrock Air Gap intake and a BG 650 speed demon carb. It is important to note the varying compression levels of the heads too.

This site never ceases to amaze me as to the quality and depth of what is available out here in terms of the knowledge base. I think I will reconsider the GT40 heads and spend a few extra $$ to go with the Edelbrocks. Thanks again, BL |
I'm new to working with aftermarket heads and I was wondering, how much power could you get from the turbo swirl, or gt-40 heads if you port them and add other things like bigger throttle body, MAF, and a mild cam (maybe an E303)?
