345hp ford 302 Crate

I'm starting to lean towards this engine as my power plant. Anyone have any comments or suggestions regarding these engines? Compatability issue that I may be overlooking? I will be mating up toploader & some form of aftermarket bellhousing.

Is their a link for that motor? I'd like to check out the specs.

Not enough information on the site to make a determination of what separates the 320 vs 345 horse motors. I suspect it's the induction setup. It looks like BOTH of the applications were dynoed using a fuel injection system.

As it appears they run the SAME heads and CAMS I would think the higher H.P. is due to a larger induction system.

Interesting that BOTH engines show either the E303 or B303 cam, and yet arrive at the same H.P. rating. The "E" series cam appears to deliver more torque at a lower rpm (2500) and the "B" series cam is 4000 rpm and above range.

As to reliability I would think these are VERY stout motors. I'd call the tech line number listed to get more information. In fact, I may call them myself!

Hyde/Ernie...the difference is in the heads. The 320 hp uses the Y303 head; the 345 uses the X303 head. Bigger ports, same valves. By the way, they will sell you a motor with either the E-303 cam or the B-303 cam; E signs off at around 4500 rpm but has better lo end torque, and the B gives up at 6000 but makes better hi end hp.

I opted for the B cam...still need to finish tuning (wanted to DRIVE this year) but just tons of fun. I suspect the E motor might be more impressive when it comes to wheelspin but the B motor will keep you grinning when reaching for 6K in fourth.

:) :) - see?

oh yeah....check out Diversified Marketing (www.buyfordmotorsport.com) too - I got my XB303 engine for $2900, delivered to the door.

Thanks for the info. What bellhousing & Trans are you running.

I know that most ERA 427 cars require the use of a 427SO. Does such protocol exist for the FIA car?

Bought a Tremec 3550 from D&D in Michigan; $1200. But also bought std 10.5" clutch and alum. bellhousing from them...clutch was about $120 and bellhsng was $130 (I think...).

You have options on the Tremec. They are available with either a 0.82 or 0.68 O/D ratio. I used 4.10 gearing and so went with the 0.68...if you use anything much lower (i.e. 3.55's) better go with the 0.82. No diff in $$ here.

Since I'm not much into drag racing anymore I went with the aluminum bellhousing. Clutches can explode, sure, but this pretty much happens when dropping the hammer. Usually.

Oh - also bought an aluminum flywheel from D&D - HIGHLY recommended. Car revs almost like a sprint car. :) :)

On the ERA FIA car you can have it set up with just about engine trans combo you want. It is recomended that you stay within the ford range of things. 289-351 for small block car & the big boy for the USRRC clone.

I will run either my 289 or possibly the 345hp 302 with a toploader. I am just a little confused as to this 302 block because most aftermarket bellhousing companies list that theirs only fit through 93'. Was there a change on the 302's after that?

turnpike boy 10-30-2003 07:33 AM

Yesindeed!

After '93 they went to the modular motors...totally different.

Anything (pretty much, anyway) that you get for a '79-'93 'Stang will work. The 302 / 5.0 litre has truckloads of parts so you won't have any trouble finding what you want.

Excaliber 10-30-2003 08:41 AM

I believe it was 1996 when the 4.6 OHC modular engine was the ONLY V-8 offered in the Mustang. The 1995 Mustang Cobra was the first application on the 4.6 OHC.

'94 and '95 5.0 V-8's had some changes, but not huge ones. '93 motors used hyperuretic pistons, '94-'95 did not. The "hyper" pistons are NOT Nitrous and "blower" friendly. In essence the 94-95 5.0's are the strongest ones Ford made.

So are these blocks based on the same blocks or are there changes to the castings that will cause problems to pre 94' applications?

Chaplin 10-30-2003 11:09 AM

Hyde-
Why don't you just get one of those Honda v-tec motors to go along with the trick body work, ground effects and fart can?:p

Way to High Tech for me buddy! :D
