Roush Performance Engines
Has anyone used any of the Roush Performance motors? They have a 427 small block, and a 402 small block that I've seen in a Superformance kit at SEMA, and other possible engines at PRI this past weekend. They had an 8 stack venturi rail injected 402 on display at PRI, an absolutely beautiful piece.
My first post here, as I'm a newbie looking to build a cobra, and am still doing research to find the best kit for me, and engine combination. Any advice or pointers welcome... |
Roush definately makes awesome engines. I was originaly looking at the Roush engine for my FFR coupe, but after doing some research (mainly on this site) I went with a company called "Performance Engineering" which is just north of Cincinnati (semi-close to you). Check out their web site at: http://www.perfeng.cc/# The guy that builds the engines name is Eric, he is great to talk to and he will always make time to explain what ever you have questions about. Do a search on this site for performance Engineering and you will find more information. Eric can build you an engine with more HP for a lower price and will give you better "tech support" that a big company.

wow, PE does seem to offer a lot of power for the money, and even include a transmission with some of their engines. I did not see any fuel injected engines, or torque and HP plots on their web site, but I will will defenitely look into their engines and ask them for some more information...
I've kinda had my heart set on electronic fuel injection though, as you can get a flatter torque curve, increased drivablility and reliability. |
I have the same opinion on the Fuel Injection. Eric is building my 418 with the Edelbrock FI. I looked at other FI kits, check out: http://www.twminduction.com/Home/Home-FR.html and http://www.verycoolparts.com/ The stack kits look awesome but they are a little more pricey than what I wanted to spend and you would need to buy things like the ECU and injectors seperate. I decided to go with the Edelbrock because it was a complete kit and I have had good luck with there tech. department. I also live close to Summit Racing which sells the Edelbrock kits and they are pretty helpfull also :cool:

Hilborn Injection sells a complete package that is flow tested and ready to install, included the ECU, fuel pump etc.... Thier FI kit has the fuel rails on the outside rather than inboard like the TWM, but you get a similar look. About the same price too.

One thing the Roush FI motors had going for them is that they are spending a lot of time to get an optimised fuel map, and if you want to change the fuel map for more performance or driveabiliy, or simply change what region of the country you live in, Roush intends to distribute the new fuel maps through any MSD shop. They made it sound like all the other FI kits have a basic one off fuel map, and it may not be optimized for drivability, etc.. They say they've been doing this kind of development for a while as they have been modifying motors for Range Rover and simple one off cals are not accepted by oem's. |
402R is one awesome engine
I have followed the development of the Roush motor for a while now. I had planned to get one although I was a little concerned it uses a 2 bolt main. I called them every few months this year checking on the status of the stack EFI, most of the time it was like pulling teeth but I eventually got the right guy. Last I heard it would be available at the end of this year. I was hoping due to their size they would be able to price the unit a little less than the competition but I believe the cost of the 402R EFI will be around 20k. I'm sure it will be an excellent unit.
I have heard they are now offering the heavy duty blocks such as Dart. That would be a no brainer for such a pricey engine. Of course, the EFI can also be added on down the road. For me in the end, it was all a moot issue. Stinkin rottin NJ regs are making me use an old pre '72 block. :CRY: :CRY: :CRY: I am so gosh darn diddly mad at them. However, I am very happy with my second choice, a 418 stroker from the Engine Factory that is currently on order. |
Your post brings up a thought. If your car is legally registered in NJ....say as QQ. Can you change out the engine without notifying the State? What changes can or can't be made?

Ed Wayland Roush's rep at the recent SEMA show expected the complete EFI for the R series engines to retail just under $6000. You can contact Ed at Roush Engineering at (734) 466-6202. He's very helpful and a hands on guy rearding these engines. And don't forget that 2 year warranty! Badger

Don't forget about Holman-Moody in Charlotte, NC @ www.holman-moody.com. I visted they facility a few weeks ago and they are doing fine. Had an original 427SC and GT-40 in the garage. They can build you about any kind of Ford engine you want to put in a Cobra.
