Stroker questions

I have a 408 stroker. Victor Jr. Heads, Edelbrock Air Gap manifold, Ford Distributor, Ford ignition box with Accel super coil. I am running a Holley 750, single pumper with vacuum secondaries. I would like some advice on spark plugs and jetting for the carb. It takes some time to warm up when it is cold but once warm (180 thermostat) it runs well until I accelerate hard. It then sputters some and will backfire before taking off. After the gas is put to it a couple of times it will then accelerate smoothly through 5 to 6 grand. It acts as if the plugs are carboned up and need to be burned off.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like your accelerator pump/jets could do with some attention.

Have you looked at the plugs after such an episode to see what they are like?

Wilf:I will check it out. I have looked at the plugs. They look as if they are getting loaded up. I am also told to get smaller primary and secondary jets for the Holley.

Backfiring can blow out the Power Valve. Be sure to check it too

Mike - unless you are well experienced in the setting up of Holley carbs (and I don't personally fall into that category I hasten to add), it would be very much worth your while to get the carb set up on a chassis dyno by an expert.

Will save you much time, possibly many $$'s, and stop you getting into a lean detonation........holed piston situation.

IŽd say the key ist the vac sec carb.

What you describe is a bog caused by too fast secondary opening.

Solution would be to put in a heavier spring. Also make sure the check valve (steel ball) is still in there.

Mike, make it easy on yourself. Call Barry Grant. We've had a number of local Cobra guys (almost all with SB strokers) who've scrapped their Holly carbs for BGs. They will set up the carb specifically for your engine configuration.
