Advice on heads for 415 please
I have ordered a W.C. Mowtown 415 short motor and the supplier is suggesting Victor Junior alloy heads and intake. With the trick flow heads and others that are available is there a better route to go. I thought the low end suffered a bit with this set up.
Anybody out there got a 415 s.b. If so I would be greatful of your comments and advice on how you rate it and suggestions for set up etc. Thanks as always for your help and even though its late, happy new year. Mike |
I have Vic Jr's on my SBF. However, I do think the high-end Trickflows made the most horsepower on a stroked small block. The twisted wedge heads made 40hp over my combo.....wished I would have known that a year ago....

Check out the last 8 issues of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords. They have conducted a extensive comparison of SBF heads. The last 4 issues (including the current issue) used 351 strokers. They flow tested, weighed valve train components, and then dynoed all of the heads. Bottom line was AFRs were always in the top few, but others performed well too.

The AFR's are tricky to get at the moment unless your distributor stocks them, they're backlogged and you can expect a several week wait.

What do you want to do with the motor? I've got a 434 with AFRs for street/track. On a budget the AFR 210s will have really crisp throttle response while the AFR 220s will breathe a little better. If the budget allows, the AFR 215 RR is the best 23* head out. The down side is that they require offset Shaft rockers like the 18* heads. If your going to spend that kind of money you might as well use 18s. The Motown block is an excellent piece. If I remember correctly, the 2002 Engine Masters Challenge was won with a Motown block and AFR 215 RRs. Scott |

What are AFR 210, 215, or 220 heads? Are these race heads? The ones I know about are the 165, 185, 205, and 225s. |

Thanks for your help guys its valued. On the question of what I want out of the motor, I want it to be O.K. to drive in traffic and I would prefer crisp acceleration rather than necessarily top end as I think it will be fast enough anyway. As everybody I want it all.
Basically I dont want it to be a pig to drive. What inlet would you opt for with the AFR's Cheers. Mike. |
