Super Chargers?
I would like to hear from someone who has a supercharger on a 302 carb. engine. Does the engine need to be built or will a supercharger setup be acceptable on a stock motor? Who makes a supercharger for a carb setup? What are the pros and cons to supercharging? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't have one on my engine, but I can tell you that you can do it. Paxton makes superchargers for carb'd engines. Weiand also makes some....but on a more higher horsepower level.
Two questions that need to be answered: 1. How much horsepower are you looking for? 2. Has the engine been rebuilt before, and what components are in it? Also, what compression ratio is the engine? It's a lot harder to force-feed a high compression engine... |

I have a Vortech Supercharged 302 (5 Liter). Mine has Mustang EFI. When the supercharger was added, we did not upgrade the rings and pistons. Depending on how you drive the car, you will burn up your rings with the extra boost. We rebuilt the engine this year after about 10,000 miles on the old one with the Supercharger. Runs a ton better and does not smoke any more. I would suggest at least rings and pistons as an up grade for a supercharger. I have seen ads in several magazines for supercharger systems for Carbs. I bet someone will let you know. We used to have a Holly Pro Injection system on the car and we replaced that with Mustang EFI a couple of years ago and that made a big difference. As long as the engine is in good running condition and you keep the boost low (6-7 psi), a stock 5.0 will live. You must keep an eye on fuel pressure and keep the timing retarded under boost though. In addition to the manufacturers listed above, B&M made a nice little roots blower - BM144. B&M was bought out by Holley so I dont know if they still sell this or not, but you see them on Ebay. Cheaper than a centrifugal piece but requires more hood clearance
