long block/short block

I am doing some 302 engine research and am a little confused.:JEKYLHYDE

In the FRPP catalog the crate engines are listed as long blocks and the engine block assemblies are listed as short blocks. In Jegs/Summit some listings don't specify which it is, and when I read the threads posted here it never comes up...

What in the difference of the short block vs. the long block as it relates to the small block family? I am looking for a self build/rebuild project for a street driver, no racing, should I even care?

Thanks for the help.

Fox,

Normally, and I stress Normally, the short block is the block with the bottom end in it. A long block is the heads, cam and intake with the block and bottom end. Some crate engines are ready to run and others have to have pulley's carbs, and other wiring added. It seems to vary from one manafacturer to another. If you have good heads, intake, cam and etc. then the short blcok can save you some money. Before ordering I would contact whomever I was going to order from and ask them just exactly what all is included in their particular short block or long block assembly. Most engines you have to supply the carb and I think on all the headers unless you order them seperatley with the engine.

Short block-block and rotating assembly

And...

And some manufacturers will also offer the long block with the tinware, i.e., the oil pan and rocker covers.

You have to speak to whomever you are ordering from to get a finite answer as to what's included.

Tony
