Advice on powertrain for new BDR
All- I'm 90 percent sure I will put a deposit on a BDR in the next week.
Their turnkey powertrain options include a Ford Factory Racing 385HP 351 with a Tremec hooked up behind. I'm getting good and bad vibes about the Ford Racing 351, can't seem to find any "hard" info online. Hey, this powertrain costs more than the first house I bought. Please give me leads to threads or direct input. Thank you for your help! UT Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. |
Do it and Do it good! you won't regret it. i was one of the first ones to take achance on BDR and have never looked back. I originally had a king cobra t-5 with my 302 but burned that up real quick, i then put in a tremec 3550 and have not had a problem since. i just dynoed at 365 hp at the wheels and 345 torque. i am going to change the carb from the 650 speed demon to a holley 'cause the demon is just to much carb for my motor. (anyone interested in a good used demon let me know, good price)
which car (#) and color are you getting? Forever Bitten Frank H |

I couldn't agree with Frank H anymore, do it and "DO it REAL good" My motor and tranny plus installation along with custom made headers will cost approximately $22000. Keith Craft all aluminum 427 windsor 612 hp 615 tq Tremec TKO with Steeda Tri Ax shifter Mcleoud twin disc clutch setup, steel blowproof Custom installation, custom headers built, chassis dynoed tuned by Keith Craft motorsports in Plano, TX Should be awhile before needing any upgrades, hopefully DON |
I'm looking at #139, Indigo blue with white stripes, just the way God intended Cobras to be. Just like the first one that blew past me on the freeway in 1967... Dude even had a long, white scarf.
Second roll bar to please girl friend, vinyl ragtop to please Momma. Aftermarket heater to give me two extra months' driving in my climate. Keith is starting to sound good, have had more info about Keith away from this forum. Keep it comin', guys, I'm 4th and goal and I sure don't wanna fumble the ball just now. Thanks again. |

I have the indigo blue and white stripes and love the color. Just do it. I have a 302 local built but I've seen several of the 351 base crate motors in many different types of cars and almost bought one but someone said ford didn't offer any warranty with crate motors but I don't know for sure. Good luck Hey frank you running AFR 165 or 185's awesome numbers from a 302 |

My car # is 89, Crimson Red with Silver stripes and silver Powder frame. Special ordered, took 8 months to get it in the garage. Just posted pics in my galley tonight. I will have $50000 in car when finished. Though will be a lot of car for the money. Sorta of on the extreme side, but than again aren't cobras suppose to be "extreme"? Keith has other motor packages available, lot better priced, mine is pretty much top of the line as far as small blocks go. DON |
I have # 84 ming blue with 302 puting out 375 to 400 hp great for street how will you use your cobra shold be the key factor on what engine to get.
|
uncle, I have bdr #93. I got the 392 ford crate with 430 hp. I have been told they all seem fast at first but you'll get use to the power and then want more. Go overboard up front so you won't be looking to upgrade in the near future. Mine is very quick and very streetable. I know at some point I will want to do something stupid and get a monster built. good luck!!!

Don,
The alloy windsor block what manufacturer is it from? I am going to go small 347 or a bit more, not sure on the big motors whether they put the same strain on down lower in the revs, with the small engines valve gear is more of a problem I guess! |
ANT
The block is Dart 4.125 bore, I priced a 302 based aluminum setup, possibly 347-355 cubes. Was only going to be about $1000 cheaper, smaller heads and few other things. I felt it was well worth $1000 to get the bigger motor, would not grow out of it as quickly. DON |

Don,
That scares me a bit the growing out of a motor business, as I would hope to have about 500+bhp out of a 347/355 engine, I have a top man here in NZ who is getting big results on the dyno, but he is talking up to 7500rpm. Getting back to growing out of I think one can get used to the smaller cubes, and I have just invested a heap in an alloy 8.8 with eaton posi etc but its only 28spline and I dont think it will like big torque. One could say do a big engine and worry about uprating axles later - eh!! |
Uncle T. mine is bdr 108 amonth away went with fms 392 crate motor cant beat it for the cost Vs. h.p about 6000.00 at your local ford dealer!

When you conbine the weight of the cobra to the limited amount of rear traction, your rearend will supprise you as to how much torque you can throw at it. My drag Mustang had 28 spline axles with a spool, had 460BB - 500tq at 3100 pound car on slicks, never broke. Changed motor to 514 -806 hp, 690tq car weight at 2950 pounds. Upgrades to strange 33spline with spool, never broke it. This is with the stock 8.8 rearend housing. DON |

Don,
Thats encouraging, on my last Cobra with BB 454 Injected 650+ I would go racing (two days) and come home take out the Jaguar hub axles and big twist in them! It had a locked 9" IRS setup, I think the locked axle contributed to the axles demise, so I should move on from those experiences. My alloy 8.8 is "IRS" and the CV joints appear to be quite strong with customade axles. Going to all alloy 392/408 appeals to me as it would be a shame to not get as much bang for a small amount more weight, how do you find under bonnet clearance with going to a high deck block and maybe a manifold similar in height to a victor junior or suchlike, the downside is minimal room for any sort of air cleaner? |
ANT
My BDR car has enough bonnet room even with my victor intake and a turkey pan. All the replicas I have seen has enough room, not familiar with your brand, bet you have enough space though. My motto, go big so you don't have to look back wondering or wishing. DON |
Thanks for all the input, guys!
I have decided on a 385HP 351W from Hi-Per Rods (That's Boudy to you BDR people). He's only 2 hours away, and will give me a 12-month warranty as long as I don't race it. Yeah, right. $10,750 with Tremec 3550, installed. Ouch. BTW- I have discovered a novel way to pay for the Blue Bomb... I work part-time at a pizza place with a number of young people. I have a line of them willing to pay me $50 an hour to "make the drag" in a Cobra. Also have a college kid who will hand-wash and hand-wax the car every week if I let him drive it from my house to the car wash and back. I love being old and treacherous. I hope my insurance agent doesn't read this forum. Thanks again. UT |
Uncle Todd...
You and I have traded emails before.....
I thought long and hard about staying with a stock 351W or stepping it up a bit. What finally made my decision was going on a cruise with some folks here in So Cal as a passenger. After talking to them and hearing what they would do different if they were starting over - the first thing out of their mouth was 'should have done the engine upgrade'. I ended up going with a 351W stroked to 396. It should put out somewhere on either side of 450hp. I made that decision about 2 months ago. Since then, I have run into numerous Cobra owners and other car folks that made me feel better about spending the extra dough. For roughly $2-2.5k more, you get more HP and likely some good upgraded engine components. I have seen it posted several time before on the forum and I now tend to agree - "If you are going to put extra money into anything upfront, make sure it's your engine" BDR #127 is in customs right now. After some body work, custom paint and finally the engine install, I should be on the road 1st or 2nd week in April. Not sure what I am going to do until then, but keep dreaming about driving my car.... Good luck and congrats on the new BDR purchase.....!! - Snak Iyz |
