Who makes the best Aluminum cyl. head for a 351w. Engine is for street and some track time.

I'm using TFS tw heads. It works good to 6500 rpm...

AFR

The only head that might be better than the AFR's is the Trickflow "R" (not standard twisted wedge) head when used on a big serious motor but they have unique exhaust ports that you would have to make headers for. For a 351 cu in motor I would go with the AFR 185's or 205's if your motor is a little bigger. If you can find any MM&F magazines from late last year, they had some great head tests with flow and dyno numbers.
BTW, I have AFR 205's and they have ports that are larger than a Victor jr's runners. They also have an extra set of exhaust tapped holes to be able to make headers that don't have to narrow down to fit by the stock bolt locations. |
I'm running a 427 stroked 351W using Pro Topline's Cyclone aluminum heads. 64cc chambers, 215cc intake runners. Seem's to be working o.k. At one time asked for feed back on them but never got a reply, but you might look into them as a nother option, everthing bolted right up.

Rick, Did you dyno your motor with the Pro Topline heads? Im curious what kind of HP your making with those heads.
|
brainsboy, The only #'s I have at this time are from computer Dyno2000 Version 3.10 and the #'s are max. torque 539 @ 4500 & max power is 529 hp @ 5500. So for now my rev. limiter is set at 6000. I only have 700 miles on this motor, my other motor was a 351 / 385 hp svo.

What I like about the protopline heads is that they use the 3" exhaust spacing and have very thick castings, I opened up the exhaust ports on my set to 1.750 and made custom header flanges so the exhaust header blends perfectly into the exhaust port.

I like AFR 225
Mild street roller-576 lift, 10.5 compression, out of the box 225 heads==612 horsepower==615 torque on dyno, on pump gas. 427 windsor DON |
Large runners are not everything guys, velocity is king. Depending on your combination, and intended operating RPM, smaller runners can make more power, especially if you are not spinning it up to 8,000 RPM. Talk to your engine machinist/builder for advice, experience really counts when picking a combination of parts.

These heads look "Way Cool"
I don't know of anyone who uses these, but on paper they look great. The best of all worlds. Small ports for good velocity, low end torque, yet higher overall flow than any two valve head, plus the perfect center plug configured combustion chamber. AND, . . . . . Everything bolts up to all the stock "stuff".
I would love to know of someone who actully uses them to know if they are as good as they sound. My Northstar Caddys are little 4.6 liter engines, and with their four valve heads, they haul ass. Same should apply with these heads. Here: http://www.araoengineering.com/Ford/frdsmb.htm Ed |
I just looked at those heads nice but looks expensive. What a neat design though. 400cfm at .500 lift.. I would like to see the dyno results at low rpms, it would be interesting to see if these would be over kill on a street car.

They came out with the small block chevy 4 valve heads over ten years ago, I still haven't seen them in anything other than a magazine article.

Well, I called them and the basic set of heads costs 5,200. Stage 2 heads were 5,400.. A little pricey. I think I would rather have an aluminum block at 3,200 before those heads.

The AFR's are all billet CNC machined and ported for around 1300 bucks.

I run the same head as Roscoe (58cc 185 AFR) and could not be happier. Beautiful workmanship and bested the GT40X heads by 50 hp.
