Which thermostat to use?

I'm running a Ford 302, bored .030", Edelbrock heads, Ford Racing intake manifold, Holley 600 DP, and a Bcam...Should I just run a stock ford t-stat? or should I use something a little different?

Thanks!

Not sure what the wheather is like there throught the season, but a 180 probably would not hurt

These are cool. Not sure if they are "necessary" but in concept and design, they are neat. They are certainly a higher quality piece than the stats you get at Auto Zone. I bought a 160 and a 180 from here and have the 160 in. Unless it's hotter than the blazes of hell outside, engine cruises at about 65-70C, which is too cold. Will be switching to the 180.

Hi all,
Use a 180 stat for carbed engines and a 195 for electronic fuel injected engines. The fuel needs to atomize properly. On electronic fuel injection the computer needs to go into "closed loop" operation. Basicly get out of warm up mode.

You definitely want a 180 stat. But, don't trust the reading on your temp gauge. Check with an infrared thermometer at the thermostat housing. Until I did, I always thought I was running too cool, when actually I was at a perfect 180.

so what degree is a stock 5.0 t-stat then, cause that's what i've got in there now???

clayfoushee 04-26-2004 03:39 PM

If it was a Ford stock EFI 5.0 in it's previous life and it's the same stat, it would likely be the 195. You should change it to a 180 stat.

go with the 195

MrGasket makes a "Hi Flow" 180 degree thermostat. I highly suggest using that if your not based off an EFI 5.0L engine. Only the later fuel injected cars like running at 195 degrees all the time.......
