Mechanical fuel pump or not
How would I know if the eccentric for the fuel pump was left on my engine.My engine had an electric pump on it before so I don't know if its still there.My engine builder swears that it is there,but he also assumed that I was going to use an electric fuel pump,and put the engine in the car never asked me if I would like to put a mechanical pump on,but then I never told him either.Looking into the engine what should I see

The eccentric should be visable through the fuel pump mounting boss looking into the internals of the engine. It is cylindrical, about 2 1/2" diameter and 3/4"-1" in height. Looks like a piece of cut off round stock steel. It mounts on the front side of the camshaft gear. Will be somewhat difficult to see if engine is in the car. May need flashlight and mirror.

Never been happy with my Holley (red) electric fuel pump... went to replace it with a mechanical one this past winter; did what Rick said above (my builder didn't remember whether they installed the eccentric either).
I was really happy to see the eccentric in the mirror - went to install the pump only to find out there isn't enough clearance between the pump (with an 90 deg. elbow AN fitting) and the frame rail. About two hours of goofing around because I didn't check the clearance first - ugh. Sticking with the electric... when this one dies - will put a better unit on. - Dan |
Ok guys,I think I see the eccentric with the mirror, looks like a disc like Rick said,gonna put the pump on and see what happens.Sorry for the dumb question,but this engine is the only ford motor I've had to get rebuilt

You might try the Holly Blue Pump. I have had one on since 96 and never had a problem, but that doesn't mean they won't fail. My only problem was I had to replace the pressure gauge as it started showing 4 pounds whether the engine was running or not. I messed up by trying to adjust for it and when I put the new gauge on and started the car I had 15 pounds pressure. Shut it opff immediately and adjusted back down to the 7 - 9 pounds they recommend. Ron :) |
I've never been a fan of electric pumps. Too many things to go wrong. Some love em', some hate em':cool:
