Oil capacity for a 302?
I have a fox body oil pan, no oil cooler. Chilton book that I have says 5 quarts but the stick is saying that it is overfilled. What is normal for this setup? Gauge reads about 60psi at startup and drops off to about 45-50 after warm-up. Dip stick is correct for this engine and is seated properly in block.

Trueoo7,
Where is your dipstick located? With the fox style pan it should go into the engine on the drivers side, to check the rear sump. I found this out the hard way. My dipstick went in at the passenger side of the timing cover and only measured the front sump. Thats for older front sump pans. Drained the oil and only 1.0 quart came out of the rear sump. Hope this helps. Ted. |
I think it is 5 qts incl filter?

5 gts, including filter is CORRECT! NOT uncommon for dip sticks to measure incorrectly. I never assume it is "accuarate". I try to determine the correct amount of oil for the engine in question and mark the dip stick accordingly.
My 427 side oiler has a "Ford Van" oil pan which runs the same height from the front to the back of the engine. 9 qts with filter, dip stick marked accordingly! ,,,,kinda cool. The oil level just covers up the word "Safe" but only the SA, leaving the FE uncovered! The gods have spoken! :D |
A stock fox pan has TWO drain plugs. Lots of folks miss the front one the first time or two they change the oil. That leaves about a quart of oil in the pan.

Never understood why Ford did that. Wonder how many Jiffy Lube oil changes were never done right for people....

Nope, mine is definetly on the drivers side, which makes sparkplug #7 hard to reach or do a compression check, believe me I know, due to earlier problems I've had to change my plugs about 5 times already. (was running SUPER rich)
Well then 5 quarts it is and I'll mark the stick accordingly. Thanks for the help !! Trueoo7 |
