Help me choose a cam..
Hi Guys,
About time to start thinking about cam selection soon. For my 351W, stock stroke. Heads will probably be either ported stockers or at best GT-40Ps. No fancy, expensive aluminum heads. Its a flat-tappet block. I'd rather not go to rollers ($$$), if I can get what I want from a flat-tappet. So here's what I'm after... It's going to be a street car, so I'm after lots of low/mid torque and "under the curve" area. I was hoping to break 400lbft somewhere just for the milestone, but what's important is that I make a good 370+lbft over most of the low/mid range (say from 2000 to 4000). That said, I don't want it to roll over too early and feel like I'm driving a truck. It's going in a car and will never tow anything, so torque all the way down to 1000rpm isn't necessary. I expected about a 6k redline, so if the power curve starts to roll over at 5200-5500, that's about what I'd like. I don't want it to roll over at 4400rpm or something like that. I'd like it to pull to at least 5. Basically I want a good balanced street cam. Gearing will probably be around 3.55 .. maybe 3.23 to 3.55. It'll be on the highway and I'd prefer to use gearing in that range to keep it civil while crusing. I honestly don't care what the idle sounds like, although with what I'm after, I doubt any cam I'd use would be more than slightly lopey anyway. So far the cam that caught my eye was a Comp XE256H . Do you guys think that'd offer a decent level of low/mid range torque, but not roll over TOO early? Any other suggestions? |
cam
that cam sounds to small. i called comp cams with the same infor except AFR 185 heads on a 347, and they recomended the xe286h cam; my personal opininion would be to call them, but go in between with the xe268 its 493/500 218/224. the 286 sounds too agressive and the 256 too small. just one mans opinion
