Low pressure spring - help needed
Guys I really need some help
I have rung a number of places in the US to try and get a Melling big block standard pressure relief spring as Milodon have stated they fit their pumps. The story is I have purchased a Milodon 18770 pump which is a big block style pump that goes with the kicked out sump I have. Unfortunately the pump came with a high pressure spring which I would prefer not to use. Can any of you guys help and if any of you are dealers do you stock the Melling spring kit. I'm just after the big block standard rate spring, the one I took out is 2 7/10 in long. I really would appreciate if you can help as it seems impossible to find a solution over here. Thanks Mike |
What color is the spring you have?
|
Sorry didnt reply straight away as I had gone to bed, time difference you know.
The spring I have is lilac in colour and it feels very stiff compared to a standard spring out of a short block pump ( I cant use this one as it is shorter). The lbox states high volume high pressure, so I guess another 20 to 30% over standard. My worry is big block style high volume and high pressure in a small block. It seems that it is relatively easy to obtain an upgrade but not to get hold of a standard. Unfortunately unlike some other manufacturers there was no standard spring in the box as an option. The reason I had to go the big block pump was down to the pickup distance from the pan. I normaly choose melling or Moroso parts, but with the Mowtown Block I couldnt get the distance from pan to pickup right. Milodon stated these two parts with the kicked out sump I have and it does give the right clearance, but with its own nightmares. You would not believe what effort I have gone through to try and find a spring - the chap at Milodon even suggested I cut a bit off the end ?????? Any sort of help I would be grateful of. Mike |

Thanks Rick
A guy from Melling Pumps e-mailed me and they are sending me a spring. What customer service. Thanks for your help Mike. |
Just here to "PUMP YOU UP"
When you reassemble the pump spring into the casting bore, the cup plug is inserted so that the end of the sping is in the cup before the plug is replaced, and is flush with the casting. I once reveresed this in error and exploded an oil filter at start up because the spring was to tightly compressed and did not provide ANY pressure relief as it is designed to do. ;) Rick |
Thanks for that Rick - appreciate the tip
