Ford sb Balance Question

My question is simple:

I know that sb's come in 28oz and 50oz balance versions. Is the crank itself different between the two, or is it just flywheel and damper?

So.......could one use a crank originally from a 28oz engine and use a 50 oz flywheel and damper and vice versa?

Thanks.

It doesn't matter, it will spin a bearing regardless of which one you use.

Answer is simpple:

The internal rotating assy (crank) is either balanced to 28 or 50 oz. Unless you use weight plugs in the crank counterweights or other alternative method of balancing - like for a stroker for instance - you MUST use the corresponding flywheel and balancer weight that goes with the crank (28 or 50oz).

As stated above there were two cranks made for the 302 Ford. Pre 1980 and post 1980. After 1979 Ford went to a lighter crankshaft with less counter weight. This means they had to add weight to the balancer and flywheel to get it to balance and so you had the 50oz balance. This had caused manyproblems over the years. Now Eagle has changed their 4340 forging where they zero balance or internaly balance with no wight on the damper or flywhell which is the best.
Just make sure that you have the right combination together and the correct damper and flywheel. Have it all balanced and their should be no problems. Good luck, Keith C
