wiped lobe on a cleveland? Part Duex
I wondered where the heck this thread went Brent;)
My initial stethoscope diagnosis was right on............ wiped on the intake of number four. One side of the lifter is the same height as new, the other about 1/8" shorter. Good news is that the filter caught almost all the debris but I flushed the motor out well any ways. No metal at all floating around the top end, rest of the valve train looks good, clearence all check and the motor is clean as a whistle inside. Amazing how much easier it is to rotate a motor without the valve train attached. QUESTIONS!!!!! - confirm something for me (laughter is OK), this motor does fire in even 90 degree increments doesn't it? - The cam gear won't pull off the cam with out pull the crank gear at the same time, correct? (what a pain) Soon to be on the road again........... Rick |
IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!
What is the correct method of checking and changing camshaft endplay on this motor????????????
Thanks Rick |
END THRUST PLATE.
You can get one of two different plates, but they must have the oil groove in them. You say the lifter was worn on one side? It did not rotate as designed. Check the hole diameter against the other lifter holes. Make sure it is the same as the others. Pipe cleaner the oil passages to that lifter. Yes, you have to pul the crank gear when you pull the cam gear. Unless, of course, you have a Pete Jackson. I did my top end last night. Got the lifters installed and the intake back on. What a pain!!! I hope the valley pan seals better with RTV than it did with rubber. What stage are you at? |
It is so nice to be going through this at the same time!
I checked the camshaft endplay with the old and new, <.001 so good! Yeah, no rotation on the lifter, I checked the bore and it looked good. Will do on the cleaning of the galley. I just slid the new cam in, install the chain and checked end play. This is the first time I really got a work out with the air tools. I will NEVER go back. Something strangly gratifying squeezing a trigger and watching the tool do the work. Next, out to the garage to degree the cam! Keep ya posted. Thanks Rick |
The new cam degreed dead on perfect!:)
By the way, the old cam showed no signs of abnormal wear, it was just the lifter that gave up. Oil passages are clear. Time to button it back up! Rick |
Well ladies and gents............ I think we have a winner! And darn good thing since I am leaving town in the Cobra in 1.5 hours!
Car fired instantly. No bad noises (and I listened with my stethoscope). Break in went well. First drive great. Cam feels strong with a bit rougher idle:D My best static timing job ever. Only two degrees off. :D :) :D :D :3DSMILE:    :MECOOL: |
I just returned from the OCC Fall Foliage Cruise and the car ran great. I like the new cam, little more lope, a little deeper and more forceful exhaust note and a good RPM range for my use. The cam is a little noisier than the old one but I suspect that is because of the more aggresive opening rates then the Ford cam.
If you want a nice cam for a Cleveland, check it out. I posted the specs someplace else but seems to me it is a Crane 54421 with duration around 230 and lift in the .525 neighborhood. Rick |
Rick,
bad to hear from your lifter trouble. But everything is fixed now and its nice to "see" you smiling again thanks to your new cam. Is it the same as mine, 524421? I love it, good cam, feels and sounds great. Clevelands forever, Uwe |
Thanks. Yep, that is the cam. Not to mild, not to hot. Does yours sound a little noiser when listening to it with a stethescope versus a milder cam?
Rick |
I never listened to it using a stethoscope.
Sorry, i can't come to terms therefore. Uwe |
If you work on the car I would buy one. Dirt cheep. I knew the problem was with in the intake on two even before I pulled the valve cover off.
